Men's Lacrosse Falls to Queens 4-3 in 7 OT's; Set All-Time NCAA Record for Longest Game

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte’s Corey Geroy scored with 18 seconds left in the seventh overtime period as the Royals took a 4-3 victory over Pfeiffer University in thrilling fashion during Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Both teams combined to break the all-time NCAA record by playing for 87 minutes and 42 seconds, two minutes and 42 seconds longer than Virginia-Maryland back on March 28, 2009. The nearly three-hour contest sees Queens improve to 7-1 overall, 3-0 in league play while the Falcons lose their second-straight falling to 8-3, 2-1.

Pfeiffer was just a mere 11 seconds away from a 3-2 win until Jimmy Baker found the back of the net late in the fourth quarter to even the contest at three forcing the extra time. The Royals’ B.J. Leighton began scoring on the day with 2:06 left in the first period. Pfeiffer’s Tim Kleehammer would even the match with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter as that 1-1 mark would carry itself into the half.

Queens would grab a 2-1 in the third 4:17 in as Matthew Michael assisted on a Brian Rose strike. Just over four minutes later, the Falcons’ Robert Hope would again square the contest with his goal midway through the third. Pfeiffer took their 3-2 lead with 6:59 left in the fourth as Kory Lutes tallied an unassisted goal, but Baker was able to get his shot off with 11 seconds left to force overtime.

Queens held the advantage in shots 45-43 while both teams were dead even in groundballs (45) and face-offs (8-for-16). The Royals held the advantage in overtime shots 17-15. Brandon Macknew made 21 saves in net for the Royals while Hayden Kirk turned away 19 for Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer now returns home to play in final three games before the Conference Carolinas tournament beginning with Lees-McRae on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
