#20 Belmont Abbey Rallies Twice to Sweep Monday Doubleheader from Falcon Baseball
March 28, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A run in the top of the eleventh and pair of runs in the top of game two’s sixth led #20 Belmont Abbey College to a Conference Carolinas sweep over Pfeiffer University on Monday afternoon. Weather pushed back the league twinbill to Monday seeing the Crusaders scoring a 7-6 and 7-4 win improving to 27-8 overall, 11-2 in league play. The Falcons fall to 13-22, 6-9.
With Pfeiffer ahead 3-1 in game one, Belmont Abbey used a game-tying two-run blast by Tim Dye (Clermont, FL) to help force extra innings. In the tenth, the Crusaders took a 6-3 lead before a dramatic, two-out, three-run bomb by the Falcons’ Tyler Smith (Locust, NC) tied the contest at six in the bottom of the frame. The eventual game-winner came in the form of a Caleb Shore (Kannapolis, NC) sacrifice-fly in the 11th.
The nightcap saw Pfeiffer carry a 2-1 lead into the sixth until a two-run double to center off the bat of Kyle Buchanon (Auburn, WA) put the Crusaders back on top 3-2. After insurance in the form of four more runs in the top of the seventh, Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) delivered a two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning to finish out scoring on the day.
Pfeiffer returns to the diamond on Tuesday hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 3:00 p.m.
