Annual "Dry Night" Set for Friday, April 8th; Public Can Join In on the Fun!
April 8, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Pfeiffer will sponsor its annual ‘Dry Night’ on Friday, April 8. “Dry Night” is an evening of substance-free activities that raises awareness about the negative impact of drinking and alcohol abuse on college campuses, and SAAC would like to invite the Pfeiffer community, as well as the surrounding communities, to attend. ‘Dry Night' also demonstrates Pfeiffer's commitment to community outreach and longstanding mission of service, while benefiting a worthy cause - the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The night's activities will include a Mr. and Mrs. Pfeiffer University pageant, dodge ball, a jello eating contest, pizza, and much more.
The night’s festivities will begin at 7pm with the pageant, doors opening at 6:30pm, at the Merner Gymnasium on the Misenheimer campus. Dodge ball, pizza, and other activities will immediately follow the pageant and wrap up prior to 11pm. Donations for entry to the night’s events are $5 per person for the Mr. PU pageant and to participate in games, and $8 for pageant, games, t-shirts for the first 150 attendees, and pizza. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.
Drinking among college students and other 18-to-24-year-olds has increased since 1998 and contributes to an estimated 1,700 alcohol-related unintentional student deaths per year, according to the latest National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report. Annually, more than 696,000 students in the same age category are assaulted by another student who was drinking, and more than 97,000 students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults.
SAAC hopes to shed light on these serious statistics and situations in an inviting environment by offering an alternative to alcohol use. Over the past three years, Pfeiffer’s SAAC has fundraised over $5,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and knowing that the average child’s wish costs approximately $6,000, SAAC members are dedicated and committed to the continued support of this worthy cause.
