March 29, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University broke open a scoreless game with three in the top of the fourth en route to a 5-2 victory over Pfeiffer University in Tuesday afternoon baseball action at Joe Ferebee Field. The win pushes the Bears to 10-26 while the Falcons suffer their eleventh-straight loss falling to 13-23.
A Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, NC) leadoff walk started the fourth as he would later come around on a Max Priest (Dunedin, FL) RBI-single to left. After a Pfeiffer balk, Matt Gasque’s (Mebane, NC) groundout to second brought home Nick Verhein (Charlotte, NC) for a 2-0 lead. Priest would later tally the frame’s final run on Chris LaVenia’s (Clearwater, FL) one-out single to center.
Pfeiffer got on the board in the fifth on a tape-measure solo home run from Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) but the Bears got that run right back in the sixth on a sacrifice-fly by Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, GA). Scoring finished with a Dan Catalano (St. Petersburg, FL) RBI-single in the Lenoir-Rhyne seventh while Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) doubled and later plated on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning.
Verhein led the Bears at the plate on Tuesday going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Shoemaker and Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) each had a pair of hits for the Falcons. Ryan Wiese (Charlotte, NC) scored the win on the mound tossing five innings allowing one run on four hits. Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, NC) needed one pitch in relief to secure the save getting a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Weather permitting, Pfeiffer will be back in action on Wednesday night with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at UNC-Pembroke.
