Softball Splits DH with Mount Olive; Johnson and LaBar Lead Friday Offense

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and Mount Olive College each scored big wins splitting a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Lady Falcons won the opener 9-3 while the Trojans shutout Pfeiffer 7-0 in the nightcap. Pfeiffer improves to 14-22 overall, 8-6 in league play while the Trojans advance to 16-21, 4-4.

Mount Olive struck first in the opener with a sacrifice fly from Aubrey Reinhard (Goldsboro, NC) in the top of the third. Pfeiffer immediately responded with two in their half of the third on a two-out, two-run double to right-center by Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC).

Each team traded a pair of runs in the fifth as Robbin Kennedy (Chesapeake, VA) and Reinhard collected RBI singles in the top of the frame while Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) doubled home Rachel LaBar (Bradenton, FL) for the Lady Falcons. Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) also scored in the frame on a wild pitch.

Pfeiffer’s five-run sixth started with a two-run triple by LaBar to center field. Johnson, Brown and Jackson would each collect another RBI later in the frame as four of the Lady Falcons nine hits came in the sixth. Johnson and LaBar were both perfect at the plate for Pfeiffer in game one. Johnson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while LaBar put together a 2-for-2 outing with a pair of runs and RBI. Brown earned the win in the circle with 2.1 innings of relief allowing nothing but two hits.

In the nightcap, Mount Olive was led by Sarah Saunders in the circle going the distance with a shutout scattering eight hits and registering a pair of strikeouts. The Trojans tallied their first two runs in the second as a Pfeiffer throwing error and sac-fly by Olivia Poplin (High Point, NC) put the visitors up a pair.

The four-run fifth opened up game two as Kennedy doubled home Kelly Minshew (Stantonsburg, NC) while Reinhard blasted a three-run shot to center. At the fence in center, Johnson nearly took the dinger away as the ball deflected off her glove and the yellow line over the fence for the round-tripper. A RBI-single in the sixth by Minshew closed out scoring on the day.

As in game one, Johnson was perfect at the plate again in game two going 2-for-2 with a walk. LaBar finished her afternoon 2-for-3 in the finale. Pfeiffer returns to Jack Ingram Field on Saturday afternoon hosting Coker at 2:00 p.m.
