Men's Lacrosse Falls Flat in Third Quarter as #1 Limestone Takes 9-4 League Win

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Limestone College, ranked as the #1 team in the country, blanked Pfeiffer University in the first and third quarters en route to a 9-4 Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon. The Saints remain perfect at 12-0 overall, 5-0 in league play while the Falcons fall to 9-4, 2-2.
The lone first quarter goal belonged to Limestone’s Desi Gonzalez. Gonzalez hit with 3:31 left in the period unassisted for a 1-0 Saints lead. In the second, the visitors would use a pair of Joshua Williams assists on Tyler Baker and Riley Loewen goals for a 3-0 lead with 7:54 left in the half.
Pfeiffer would get on the board with 3:25 to go before the break as Justin Rose would slam home an unassisted tally for a 3-1 game. Tom Buckley would quickly make it a 3-2 game 62 seconds later after an assist from Steven Tilmon. Limestone would take momentum into the break with a man-down goal by Shayne Jackson with 1:41 remaining in the second.
Saturday’s third-quarter saw Limestone control it from start to finish as Thomas Langen hit just 64 seconds into the second half. More than 10 minutes later, Loewen and Jackson would each find the back of the net again for a 7-2 Saints lead through three.
In the final 15 minutes of action, Tilmon and Mike Triolo would try to spark a Pfeiffer comeback with a three-goal deficit as the clock showed 8:41 remaining. Limestone would finish off the Falcons with a Ken Kerr and Loewen goal with minutes left.
Pfeiffer led the Saints 33-30 with shots on the day and 40-35 on the groundballs. Limestone held the 19-15 advantage with shots on goal as netminder Steve Gartelman made 11 saves in the win.
Pfeiffer will close out the 2011 regular season on Tuesday hosting Lees-McRae at 4:00 p.m.
