Bintz Named New Head Coach of Men's and Women's Volleyball
April 11, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Director of Athletics, Mary Ann Sunbury, has announced that Steve Bintz will become the new head coach of men and women’s volleyball at Pfeiffer University effective May 1st, 2011. Former coach Ben Guiliano has accepted the same position at Keuka College in his native state of New York after six seasons in the Village.
At 23, Bintz grabs his first head coaching position, becoming one of the NCAA’s youngest coaches of all-time, after coming to Pfeiffer in 2009 as a volleyball assistant. Bintz departed Siena College in Albany, N.Y, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish graduating Magna Cum Laude. Bintz is currently working on his Masters degree.
“Coach Bintz is an up and coming coach and will do an outstanding job for Pfeiffer,” replied Sunbury. “Coach Guiliano has prepared Steve very well leading into a smooth transition for 2011-2012. We are all certainly looking forward to the successes ahead for men and women’s volleyball.”
At Siena, Bintz was president and captain of the men’s division two club team as a setter and right-side hitter. He was a two-time all-conference player in the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association and helped lead his squad to a top-25 national ranking during his senior season. He is currently IMPACT certified with USAV, a member of the AVCA and head coach of the Carolina Region Boys High Performance team.
“I am thoroughly honored and excited to accept the opportunity to lead the volleyball programs at Pfeiffer University as the next head coach,” stated Bintz. “Coach Guiliano and my other mentors have prepared me well to take on the task and having worked with the men’s and women’s teams, I know there is a great deal of talent. I anticipate a successful transition and plan to build on the great foundation of each team which has been created in recent years. I am thankful for the support I have already received from the athletics administration and look forward to sharing the future with the Pfeiffer family.”
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Bintz also served as the assistant director of Penfield Performance Volleyball camps prior to his arrival at Siena. In addition, he served as a student assistant for the women’s volleyball team at the University of Mary Washington. In his high school years, Bintz racked up all-county awards while playing at McQuaid High School in Rochester, helping the Knights to a section five title while finishing as the state runner-up in 2004.
“I am excited that Steve will take over as head coach as I leave with mixed emotions,” commented Guiliano. “He brings a wealth of enthusiasm and a knowledge for the game that is beyond his years. I have no doubt he will continue to build quality programs at Pfeiffer as we have had possibly the best recruiting class ever. It is tough to leave such a great class coming in on both sides. I’m glad to be going home to family and friends, but Pfeiffer has provided me with a wonderful opportunity to coach again and I will miss the relationships with my co-workers, players and alumni that I have experienced over the past six years.”
Bintz will begin his first full campaign as the head coach September 2-3, 2011 as Pfeiffer participates in the Queens Invitational.
