Men's Lacrosse Advances to Tournament Championship with 8-5 Win over Queens; Rematch with #1 Limestone Set

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Third-seeded Pfeiffer University advanced to the championship game in the 2011 Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse tournament with an 8-5 win over host Queens on Friday night The Falcons move to 10-4 overall facing top-seeded Limestone in Sunday's final. The Royals drop to 7-5 with the loss.
The Falcons got on the board first scoring with 12:44 on the clock in period one. Tucker Hammock gave Pfeiffer two points when he followed James Shepherd’s goal with one of his own. Queens would respond when Alex Warehime netted a goal at the 5:26 mark. Pfeiffer would close the period with one more goal giving the game at 3-1 score heading into the second.
David Weise scored a lone goal with 1:07 left to go in period two bringing the Royals to within one of the Falcons heading in to the locker room for half time.
The third quarter was all Pfeiffer as they outscored Queens 4-1 giving themselves a four point cushion going into the final quarter.
Shepherd of the Falcons scored his third goal of the game at the 8:44 mark giving Pfeiffer its largest lead of the game, 8-3. A goal scored by T.C. Whaley at 3:08 gave hope for a comeback, however, the Royals were unable to create a run as turnovers and missed shots continued to add up in the final minutes. Jimmy Baker netted the final goal of the game with 24-seconds left giving the semifinal game an 8-5 score.
The Royals were outshot 40-to-30 tonight, but edged the Falcons in ground balls 39-to-36. Queens also won 10 of the 17 face-offs. The Royals did struggle holding on to the ball committing 27 turnovers.
Joe Taylor won all 10 of Queens’ face-offs while collecting six ground balls. Fred Bush also scooped up six ground balls. Brandon MacKnew took the loss in goal after tallying 18 saves.
Shepherd led Pfeiffer with his three goals on the evening while Kory Lutes scored two. Hayden Kirk earned the win in goal getting 14 stops and collecting five ground balls.
