Results vs. Erskine (2009-03-28 00:00:00)
March 28, 2009Misenheimer, NC – The No. 24 Pfeiffer Falcons split with the visiting Flying Fleet of Erskine College on Saturday at Joseph S. Ferebee Field. Game one started on Friday at 2:30 PM and did not finish until 10:30 the following morning. The game ended with the Fleet winning a pitchers’ duel, 2-0. The Falcon bats exploded in game two and Pfeiffer prevailed by a score of 13-0.
Game One – Pfeiffer 0, Erskine 2
Neither the Falcons nor the Fleet could manage to score a run in game one on Friday before the game was suspended due to rain. When the game resumed on Saturday Erskine jumped on the board with their first batter. Jon Bolding (Pickens, SC) connected on a Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, NC) pitch and sent it over the center field wall to put Erskine ahead, 1-0.
The Pfeiffer bats continued to struggle on Saturday. Fleet pitcher William Buzhardt (Columbia, SC) kept the Falcons off balance on Friday and Russell Reid (Hudson, NC) kept Pfeiffer frustrated on Saturday when the game resumed.
Erskine pushed an insurance run across home plate on an RBI single by Keith Hill (Abbeville, SC). The Fleet threatened in the eighth by loading the bases, but Adam Sedberry (Monroe, NC) shut the door. Reid remained strong down the stretch giving Erskine the win.
McDaniel suffered the loss going six innings giving up only one run on four hits. Sedberry pitched in relief and gave up one run on two hits over three innings. Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC), Brandon Rouse (Kinston, NC), Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC), and Julian Medina (Glen Cove, NY) picked up the Falcons’ only hits.
Buzhardt started for Erskine and pitched four innings on Friday allowing only two hits. Reid picked up the win in relief tossing five innings. He surrendered two hits and struck out six.
Bolding led the Fleet at the plate. He went 2-3 with a homerun.
Game Two – Pfeiffer 13, Erskine 0
In game two the Pfeiffer offense came alive early and often. Will Davis (New London, NC) started the second inning with a walk and was advanced by a Rouse sacrifice. Following a hit batter and a walk, the Falcons scored on an error to go up 1-0.
Pfeiffer added two more runs in the third when Davis doubled home Shoemaker and Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC) singled home Davis.
The Falcons exploded in the third and put the game out of the Fleet’s reach. Pfeiffer used three hits, three walks, and a hit batter to score six runs in the inning. Shoemaker highlighted the inning with a homerun to right field to get the scoring started. Pfeiffer led 9-0 by the end of the inning.
Pfeiffer was not done scoring and in the sixth Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) scored Rouse and Dunn on a single to left. The Falcons finished off the day’s scoring when Dunn hit a two-run opposite field homerun in the seventh to give Pfeiffer the 13-0 advantage.
Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) picked up his eighth win of the season by pitching a complete eight inning game. He gave up zero runs on three hits while striking out seven.
At the plate Pfeiffer used a balanced attack that included every starter having at least one hit. Shoemaker and Dunn each had a two-run homerun and Lyon added three RBI.
Starting on the mound for Erskine was Mike Moore (Lexington, SC) who picked up the loss. He went two innings and gave up two runs. Greg Huff (McDonough, GA), Brandon Garret (Woodruff, SC), and Cody McElhaney (Graniteville, SC) picked up the only hits for Erskine in game two.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday at Tusculum College. The Falcons remain in Tennessee on Wednesday to face Carson-Newman.
