Hebberd and Rose Named Conference Carolinas Spring Scholar Athletes of the Year

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Conference Carolinas announces the Spring Scholar Athletes of the Year as recently voted on by the student-athlete affairs committee.  This prestigious award is presented annually to a student-athlete in each sport for recognition of their outstanding academic and athletic achievements. Pfeiffer University’s Sarah Hebberd (Women’s Lacrosse) and Justin Rose (Men’s Lacrosse) were selected as those sports’ representatives.

Each member school submits candidates that are the best of the best for the conference from their sport while meeting certain qualifications for nomination.  The qualifications include being a junior or senior student-athlete with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all work completed at their member institution that have played in a conference sponsored sport. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athletes cumulative average through the previous semester and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year. Additionally, in order to qualify for the award the student-athlete must be a current member of the All-Conference Carolinas First, Second, or Third Team that were recently selected by head coaches from conference member institutions that nominate and then vote upon award winners.

Steven Thiele completed a successful junior season on the mound for Belmont Abbey. During the 2011 season the Miami, FL native had a 6-3 record including 11 starts, 4.36 ERA, 51 strikeouts and a .258 batting average against opponents. The First Team All Conference selection was highlighted twice as Pitcher of the Week during the year. The Conference Carolinas All Academic selection earned a 4.0 GPA during the fall 2010 semester and has a cumulative 3.84 GPA. He is also a proud member of the Chi Alpha Sigma – NC Chapter for Academic Excellence.

Sydney Greenwalt will be remembered as an integral part of Coker College’s softball program. The senior concluded her eligibility as a First Team All Conference player, garnering All Tournament team and Pitcher of the Week accolades while leading her team to a winning season. During the 2011 campaign she played 26 games, pitched 140.2 innings, with 74 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA. The Edwardsville, IL, native will be an honor graduate with a 3.77 GPA and will continue her success in graduate school later this year. Greenwalt’s academic credentials are as impressive as her achievements in the playing field. She is an Academic All-American and Academic All-Conference member.  She has also received multiple awards including the 2011 Behavioral and Social Science Outstanding Student Award and the 2011 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Her leadership attributes and commitment to excellence allowed her to hold a variety of leadership roles for her institution.

Women’s Tennis
Christine Vanard finished her NCAA eligibility at Lees-McRae College after a successful college career. The Winston-Salem, N.C, native was an integral part of the tennis team garnering recognition both inside and outside the tennis court lines. The senior has a 3.86 GPA, is member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, and was part of Lees-McRae College’s fall 2010 Dean List. Her academic success and athletic ability help her earn multiple conference acknowledgments including Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll member, All-Academic Team recognition and four-time All-Conference representative.
Men’s Tennis
Travis Vanhoy will be remembered as an essential part of the Lees-McRaes tennis program. The Olin, N.C, native has a 3.65 GPA, is member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and was part of the Lees-McRae College fall 2010 Dean List. The two-time Conference Carolinas All-Conference selection garnered All-Academic recognition as well as being a Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll member.

Women’s Golf
Michele Low graduates Belmont Abbey helping the Crusaders to the 2011 Conference Carolinas tournament championship. The Ipoh, Malasia native, led her team to the conference title and was selected as the 2011 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. Low was a first team representative and was selected as the golfer of the month two times during the academic year. The senior has a 3.45 GPA and is a member of the Conference Carolinas All-Academic team.

Men’s Golf
Peter Tarver Jones concludes his NCAA eligibility at Belmont Abbey being named the league’s men’s golf scholar athlete of the year.  The Worthing, England, native was selected as the Conference Carolinas February Golfer of the Month and was a First Team All-Conference selection. The senior has a 3.3 GPA and is a member of the Conference Carolinas All-Academic team.

Women’s Lacrosse
Sarah Hebberd was a pillar on the 2011 Pfeiffer University women’s lacrosse team. The senior from Golden, C.O., was a first-team all-conference, all-tournament selection and the week number seven player of the week. During her final season, Hebberd was a constant offensive threat scoring 43 goals and leading her team into the conference tournament championship match. In the classroom, Hebberd was no slouch either, earning a spot on the academic all-conference team while holding different leadership position for her institution. Hebberd is the Conference Carolinas National SAAC representative and has been the liaison between league members, the conference office, and the NCAA National SAAC since January 2009.  Throughout her tenure she has contributed at the national level and was recently selected as the NCAA DII National SAAC vice chair for the 2011-12 academic term.

Men’s Lacrosse
Justin Rose from Rochester, N.Y, will enter his senior year after a successful junior season at Pfeiffer University.  The midfielder played in all 16 matches and led his team in goals, finding the net a total of 26 times. The First Team All-Conference selection is a part of the Pfeiffer Dean’s List, the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team and currently has a 3.8 GPA in physical education.

Women’s Track & Field
Hannah Henderson, a junior from Canavas, WV, will enter her senior year after a successful year at Lees-McRae College. Henderson is a multi sport student-athlete and received the Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year award during the fall semester. She is member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and was part of Lees-McRae College Fall 2010 Dean’s List. During the Conference Carolinas Track & Field meet Henderson finish second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and seventh in the 400 meter hurdles. She currently holds a 4.74 GPA as a Communication Arts major with a minor in Appalachian Studies.

Men’s Track & Field
Paul Hoffman will enter his senior year after a successful year at Mount Olive College. The Lakeview, N.Y, native participated in various events during the Conference meet and added important points to help Mount Olive College capture the 2011 team championship title. Hoffman currently holds the fastest conference time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event and the third fastest time in the 10,000 meter run. The dual sport student-athlete currently holds a 3.61 GPA and is part of the Conference Carolinas All-Academic team.     


Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletic conference made up of 11 teams from North Carolina and South Carolina. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College.  For the upcoming 2011-12 academic year King College (Bristol, TN) and North Greenville University (Tigerville, SC) will join as full Conference Carolinas league members.
