Solid Defense Leads Catawba to 3-0 Sweep; Women's Volleyball Tastes Defeat for First Time in 2011
September 6, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Solid defense led by libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA) and her 21 digs was one of three players in double figures as Catawba College claimed a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) sweep over Pfeiffer University in women’s volleyball action on Tuesday night in the Merner Gym. As a team, the Lady Indians popped up 57 digs moving to 4-1 on the year while the Lady Falcons suffered their first defeat of the season dipping to 3-1.
Pfeiffer held a five-point, 11-6 lead, early in set one before Catawba reeled off the next nine-straight points to grab a 15-11 advantage. Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA) had a pair of kills in the spurt while Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC) added a kill and service ace. A kill by Pfeiffer’s Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) brought the hosts to within two at 17-15, but another five-point stretch with a pair of aces by Denise Grissom (Stokesdale, NC) iced set one for Catawba.
In the middle set, Whitmer helped guide the Lady Indians to a 16-7 lead with three more kills in front of a Pfeiffer timeout. The Lady Falcons crept to within a half-dozen after four-straight Catawba miscues, but two more put to the floor by Emily Richardson (Salem, VA) and Whitmer put the visitors up 2-0 in the match.
Both teams traded small runs to begin the third set as Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) cut the deficit to one at 10-9, before a Savannah Thomlinson (Rensenburg, NY) kill gave Catawba a bit of breathing room at 13-11. Another Lancellot kill got the Lady Falcons again to within a point, but three straight errors gave Catawba their final bit of space. A last ditch effort in the form of two Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) aces made it a 21-19 game until a final pair of Pfeiffer errors gave Catawba the match sweep.
Whitmer led the Lady Indians with 11 kills hitting just under .300 for the set. Raye led with a match-high 29 assists while adding 11 digs with Grissom’s 12. For Pfeiffer, Lancellot put down a team high six kills while Glendenning dished out 16 assists. Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) paced the home team with 10 digs.
Pfeiffer returns to the hardwood Friday and Saturday with three matches at the USC-Aiken Invitational. The weekend begins with a 7:00 p.m. match against Augusta State in South Carolina.
