#7 Lenoir-Rhyne Needs Golden Goal in 93rd Minute to Sneak Past Women's Soccer 2-1
September 12, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne’s Laura Linehan (San Diego, CA) put home the golden goal 2:28 into overtime allowing the seventh-ranked Bears to take a 2-1 victory over Pfeiffer University in women’s soccer action Monday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. LRU avoids the upset bid improving to 2-1 on the season while the Lady Falcons dip to 0-4.
Linehan took a right cross feed from Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, IA) and found the back of the net going right post for the game-winner in the 93rd minute of play. With just 5:12 left in regulation, Pfeiffer’s Brittany Papaj (Sandy Hook, CT) fired a tough angle shot from the right side of the 18-yard box and went top shelf over Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, CA) to knot the contest at one and eventually force the extra session.
Lenoir-Rhyne put home the match’s first goal in the 25th minute as Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, FL) tallied her second of the season unassisted for a 1-0 Bears lead. LRU held the majority of the action on their half of the field taking 18 first half shots, 28 total in the match. The Bears only put five of their shots on net while the Lady Falcons had three.
Pfeiffer will return to Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday afternoon traveling to Spartanburg, South Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with Converse.
