Four Falcons Fired Identical 73's; Tied with Bluefield State after Round One

BADIN, N.C. – Pfeiffer University stands atop both the men’s and women’s fields after round one of the 2011 Pfeiffer Intercollegiate golf tournament held at the Badin Inn Resort and Golf Club. Steph Peareth and Chelsea Demers led the way for the Lady Falcons finishing one-two on the women’s side while the Pfeiffer men finds themselves deadlocked at 292 with Bluefield State College after the first 18 holes.
Peareth fired a front side 37 finishing one better on the back for a first round 73 to lead the competition on the 5,832-yard, par 71 layout. Demers followed right behind with a pair of 37’s totaling 74 good for a second-place tie with Alisiya Klochkova of Brevard College. Dea Mahendra of Lander stands in fourth overall after day one posting a 78 while Brittany Boyd of Limestone is three shots back in fifth. Limestone trails Pfeiffer in the team event by 19 heading into Tuesday’s final round.
On the men’s side, four Falcons carded 73’s to open up Monday while Bluefield State used a pair of 72’s by Jeff McGraw and Tyler Browning to anchor their 292. Brevard was led by Kim Koivu’s one-over-par 71 and Tom Rennie’s two-over 72 to trail the leaders by just four in the team event. Limestone’s Cody Robertson and Pfeiffer’s Tyson Louth lead after day one individually both charting the 6,397-yard, par 70 layout even through 18. Robertson put up a 34-36 while Louth carded the lowest nine of the day with a front side 33.
In overcast, cool weather with temperatures in the mid 60’s, the men’s field torched Badin Inn with 93 birdies during the opening round. Three holes saw a double-digit birdie production led by 13 on the par-4 12th. Tuesday’s final round is set to begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
