Amerell Posts Another Monster Kill Night as Women's Volleyball Comes Back for 3-2 Win over Coker
September 27, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Trailing two sets to one, Pfeiffer University had to rally back to take sets four and five to notch a 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-12) victory over Coker College in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Tuesday night. Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) posted a 23-kill night as the Lady Falcons advance to 6-5 overall, 3-1 in league play. Despite 18 kills from Katie McElveen (Hartsville, SC), the Cobras drop their third-straight dipping to 6-8, 3-2.
A service ace by Amerell early in the opening set put the hosts up 13-8, before holding on to that five-point lead thanks to three later errors by the Cobras making it 16-11. A Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) kill put the Lady Falcons up four after stifling a mini-Coker run, before a Samantha Celek (Charleston, SC) kill later put the Cobras within one at 22-21. Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC) put down a late kill to give Pfeiffer set point while another Coker miscue put the Lady Falcons up in the match 1-0.
Sets two and three belonged to the visitors as kills from McElveen and Kelly Stine (Fort Collins, CO) coupled with three Pfeiffer errors put the Cobras up 5-0 early on as they would never trail in the second set. A pair of kills by Jordan Arnsmeyer (Sumter, SC) and Hannah Vadakin (Centennial, CO) put Coker up 11-3 while back-to-back kills by Amerell made things interesting late as Pfeiffer trailed 18-16. Eventually, a couple of three-point runs by Coker with two kills in there by McElveen along with two more Lady Falcon errors saw the Cobras even the match at one set apiece.
Tied at five in the middle set, a throw down by Vadakin and back-to-back points from Arnsmeyer put Coker up 8-5 as they would again hold a lengthy lead throughout the set. For the third-straight set, things got tight towards the end as an Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC) kill cut the lead down to two at 21-19, but four-straight Coker points ended the third with two of those coming from Celek.
Pfeiffer wasted little time in the fourth getting out to an 11-5 advantage thanks to Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) and a rare hitting error by McElveen. Amerell later put the hosts up 10 at 18-8 and 19-9 with two more kills before forcing a fifth and final set on another kill for a 25-17 set win.
In the match-deciding fifth, an ace by Amerell and attack error by the Cobras put Pfeiffer up 8-3 before Coker again, came storming back. McElveen led the charge with three kills in a five-point stretch for Coker cutting the lead down to 8-7 before each side traded errors to make it 10-8 in favor of Pfeiffer. Amerell’s final kill of the night, three Cobra errors and a final put down by Vizvary allowed the Lady Falcons to secure their third-straight victory overall and second-straight five-setter in eastern division play.
Amerell was the only Lady Falcon to post double-digit kills with her 23 while Glendenning led in the assist department with a match-high 44. Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) led four in double-figures with 24 digs while Taylor Houser (Mount Holly, NC) finished right behind with 19.
Arnsmeyer trailed McElveen in the hitting department with a dozen kills on the night while Celek put up 41 assists. Brittany Bass (Bethune, SC) dug up 28 balls on the night while Stine finished with 19.
