September 30, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Led by Ashley Pittman’s (Norris, TN) 23 kills and attack percentage of .500, King College was able to pick up a 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday night in the Merner Gym. The win pushes the Tornado to 10-8 overall, 4-1 in the western division while the Lady Falcons even to 6-6, 3-2 in the east.
The opening set belonged completely to King as Payton Tipton (Cleveland, TN) served up a string of seven-straight points early on with an ace and kill by Sarah Van Goethem (Aurora, CO) posted a quick 11-3 lead. After two more kills by Van Goethem and back-to-back aces by Kirsten Hamel (Weaverville, NC), the Tornado found themselves up a dozen at 16-4. Van Goethem would pick up another one of her 19 kills on the night to end a rapid set one 25-13 for the visitors.
The Lady Falcons would bounce back and show life in a set two win as a kill and ace by Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) got the ball rolling. Two more O’Bryant kills would lead to a 9-7 Pfeiffer advantage before a kill by Pittman evened the contest at 10. A service ace by Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) and throw down by Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC) gave the Lady Falcons the set lead for good at 16-12. A pair of Pfeiffer errors allowed King a momentary comeback, before the Tornado returned the favor with two miscues of their own to make it 20-16. After another O’Bryant aces, Lancellot and Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) would lead the way resulting in a two-point, 25-23 set win to even the match at one apiece.
Both teams traded early points in the third until a four-point spurt led by Van Goethem and Shannon Earwood (Carson City, NV) put King up for good. Van Goethem put down another kill and ace while Earwood went back-to-back in the kill department for a 14-11 lead. A pair of Pittman kills and handful of Lady Falcon errors quickly pushed King to set point before another Pfeiffer mistake ended set three 25-17 for the Tornado.
Set four again was close from start to finish featuring a tied score 11 times with three late lead changes. Trailing 20-17, King started their rally with two-straight kills by Mariah Herington (Jonesborough, TN) to get the Tornado within one. After an ace and subsequent service error by Joscelyn Knott (Lake Mary, FL), back-to-back kills by Van Goethem and Pittman put the visitor up one forcing a Pfeiffer timeout. Out of the break, Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) tied the score at 22 with one of her four kills on the night in front of a Pittman kill and ace by Natalie Brown (Brentwood, TN) gave the Tornado match point. Pittman would end the night just like she started with her 23rd and final kill to give King the 3-1 match win.
Pittman and Van Goethem were the only two to reach double figures in the kill department for King with Earwood putting up a match-high 50 assists. Knott led three players with double-digit digs popping up 25 in the victory. King hit .381 as a team on Friday posting a .400+ hitting percentage in each of their three victorious sets.
Pfeiffer was led by Amerell’s 15 kills followed closely behind with Lancellot’s 13. Setter Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) dished out 44 assists while O’Bryant led the way in the digs department with 13.
The Lady Falcons quickly return to action on Saturday afternoon traveling to North Greenville for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Crusaders.
