GAFFNEY, S.C. – Pfeiffer University (5-6, 4-3) played the role of spoiler as they used three first half goals to down Limestone College (6-4, 4-2) by a final score of 4-2 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action Thursday at Saints Field. With the setback, the Saints were denied their 100th win as an NCAA Division II member and will now look to capture the historic milestone against North Greenville on Homecoming Saturday.

After spotting the home team an early 1-0 lead, Pfeiffer responded with three straight scores over the remainder of the first half. Rachel Shapelow (Swan Point, Md.) started the onslaught in the 18th minute when she turned the defense and dished off to Katie Collins (Concord, N.C.) directly in front of the net for the equalizing goal.

Looking to regain the advantage, the Saints put together a few quality offensive possessions but to no avail as shots by senior midfielder Ashley Alderin-Fleagle (Kernersville, N.C.) and freshman forward Dominique Evans (Haymarket, Va.) were blocked before an attempt by senior forward Vanessa Jarrett (Ottawa, Ontario) sailed wide of the mark. Not long after, the Falcons again found the LC defense out of sorts when Ashley Harrington (Albemarle, N.C.) drove the baseline and then found Brittany Papaj (Sandy Hook, Conn.) for an open net goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Pfeiffer made it a 3-1 affair just over five minutes later after Harrington grabbed the rebound off a Limestone corner kick and then sprinting down the sideline on the counterattack, chipping a shot over LC keeper Kristen Alderin-Fleagle (Kernersville, N.C.) to give the visitors a 3-1 margin at the break.

At the restart, the Blue and Gold closed the gap to 3-2 when freshman forward Gabriella Reid (Birmingham, England) found the range from 25 yards out eight minutes into the second half. Limestone put together one last effort to knot the match but shots by sophomore midfielder Tillman Fennell (Easley, S.C.) were off-key, allowing the Falcons put the match away for good on an unassisted score by Hannah Hill (Monroe, N.C.) in the 87th minute.

In the early going, Limestone jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute after Ashley Alderin-Fleagle headed in her 10th goal of the season off a corner kick by senior defender Justine McCabe (Fergus, Ontario). The momentum may have shifted completely in favor of LC six minutes later but a clean look by Evans bounced off the far post to set up the visitors first half surge.

For the game, Pfeiffer held a slim 14-12 advantage in shots taken while doubling up Limestone 6-3 in corner kicks.

Harrington paced the Falcons offense with a goal and an assist on three shots while Hill chipped in a goal on two attempts. Collins and Papaj each contributed a score while Shapelow tallied an assist. Keeper Jamie Alcala (Fredricksburg, Va.) recorded one save in the win.

Ashley Alderin-Fleagle punched in her league-leading 10th goal of the season while Reid posted her fifth of the year. McCabe registered her second consecutive game with an assist. Kristin Alderin-Fleagle pulled in four saves.
