Crusaders Hit .310 to Sweep Women's Volleyball 3-0

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Belmont Abbey College hit .310 as a team en route to a speedy 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) sweep over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday night inside the Merner Gym. The win pushes the Crusaders to 12-10 overall, 7-4 in league play, while the Lady Falcons drop to 7-9, 4-5.
In the opening set, a kill be Bria James (Statesville, NC) and two-straight errors by Pfeiffer put the Crusaders up 11-6 early. After a kill by Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) brought the Lady Falcons to within four midway through the set until O’Bryant would later serve up an ace to cut it to three at 15-12. From there, Angela Jubb (Peachtree City, GA) would serve up the next five points with an ace, pair of kills by Stefanie Holler (Wake Forest, NC) and two more Lady Falcon miscues to take the opening stanza by eight.
Set two was déjà vu all over for Pfeiffer despite having a 15-13 lead after an ace served up by Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC). Belmont Abbey would then take off on a 12-2 run to end the middle set as Pfeiffer committed seven errors in that span while Jubb added three more kills over those final 14 plays.
Another late run in the third moved the Crusaders in position for the sweep after the 24th point with the match squared at 12 apiece. This time around, it was a 12-3 stretch that sank the Lady Falcons led by Holler and Jamie O’Connell (Dublin, OH) kills before a final Molly Gwaltney (Colorado Springs, CO) put down ended the match at 25-15.
For the Crusaders, Lydia Schellenberg (Jacksonville, FL) led the way with a match-high 11 kills along with Holler. Holler hit a career-best .611 in the victory. Gwaltney put up 32 assists in the win while Jubb led the way in the digs department with 17. Belmont Abbey hit .275, .342 and .314 in each of the three sets on Friday night.
Pfeiffer was led by Kelly Lancellot’s (Naples, FL) seven kills, hitting .385, and Cate Glendenning’s (Holly Springs, NC) 25 assists. Libero Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) popped up 13 digs in the loss.
Both teams will have quick turnarounds before Saturday afternoon action on their home courts.
