Lady Falcon Seniors Wrap Up Regular Season with 3-0 Sweep of St. Andrews; Await Playoff Fate with Other League Matches Today

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Playing in their final regular season home match, Pfeiffer University seniors Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC), Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) and Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) all played big roles in a 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-16) sweep over St. Andrews University on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Lady Falcons to 10-14 overall, 7-10 to end the regular season in league play, now need a victory by Queens over Coker or Mount Olive over Barton to secure the east division’s final playoff spot. St. Andrews ends their season dropping to 2-30, 0-17.

Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) created set one separation serving up seven-straight points to make it 14-5 with a pair of aces and pair of kills by Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA). The Lady Falcons maintained their healthy lead throughout the set as a kill by Kelsey Blauser (Round Rock, TX) and ace by Wands finished off the opening set 25-12.

Trailing 19-15 after a Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) kill, the Knights made a late push eventually knotting the contest at 22 after a pair of kills by Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC). Tied at 24-24, Glendenning and Amerell would post back-to-back kills allowing Pfeiffer to take a 26-24 set and 2-0 match lead.

In the final set of the day, three-straight errors by the Lady Falcons brought St. Andrews to within one at 12-11, but a kill from Gray and O’Bryant put Pfeiffer back up three en route to the win. Glendenning added another kill while Gray served up another ace before another Blauser kill ended the afternoon.

For Pfeiffer, O’Bryant led all with nine kills hitting .318 in the win. Glendenning assisted 23 times while popping up a team-high 12 digs. The Knights were led by Duggan’s half-dozen kills and Megan Nelson’s (Edmonds, WA) 16 assists. Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) dug up a match-high 19 digs.

Pfeiffer now holds most of the playoff tiebreakers after Saturday’s win, but still need a little help. Should Barton and Coker both win later today, Barton would win the three-way tiebreaker and advance as the number three seed ending the Lady Falcons season. If either Barton or Coker come up short, Pfeiffer holds the advantage in all other tiebreaking scenarios to advance.
