Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Mount Olive College erased as much as a 16-point deficit and held Pfeiffer University without a field goal over the final 7:46 to pick up a 79-73 victory in Conference Carolinas womenís basketball action on Thursday night. The victory pushes the Trojans to 8-3 overall, 2-0 in league play while the Lady Falcons dip to 6-5, 1-1.

The first half was dominated by Pfeiffer as the Lady Falcons didnít seem to miss from behind the arc shooting 56% led by junior Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC). Cox poured in 20 first half points, finishing the night just five points shy of tying a 35-year-old school record for points in a game, knocking down six of the 13 triples on the night.

The Lady Falcons jumped out to their 16-point, 38-22 lead using a 22-8 run in a six-minute span keyed by triples from Cox, Haley Grimsley (Thomasville, NC), Shelley Reese (Brown Summit, NC) and Jodie Lemons (Madison, NC).

Early in the second, Mount Olive made their comeback with their own 11-0 run that started with a three-ball from Andrea Jones (Suffolk, VA) and trickle down to just two after a pair of free throws by Tamara Nesmith (Richmond, VA). After baskets by Vontenea Williams (Granite Falls, NC), Grimsley and another three from Cox, Pfeiffer had temporarily stopped the bleeding back up nine with 11:55 to play.

Nesmith would cut the lead back down to three at 64-61 with 8:04 showing on the clock while Cox would lay in what turned out to be the Lady Falcons final field goal of the contest with 7:46 left. Free throws would keep Pfeiffer close until Jonesí layup three minutes later put the visitors up for good. Mount Olive wrapped things up on an 18-6 run to notch the six-point win.

Cox would lead all scorers on the night with 34 while Lemons and Grimsley each finished in double-figures with 12 and 10 respectively. The Trojans was paced by Jonesí 22 and Nesmithís 20. The stingy Mount Olive defense held the Lady Falcons to just 29% shooting in the second half.
