Women's Basketball Lacks Second Half Defense as Limestone Runs Away with 88-64 League Win

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A near perfect night of shooting by Limestone College’s Kaileigh West (Jacksonville, IL) resulting in a game-high 26 points helped the Saints stay unbeaten in Conference Carolinas play with an 88-64 trouncing of Pfeiffer University in women’s basketball action on Saturday night. West went 12-of-13 from the field while knocking down both free throw attempts improving the Saints to 11-4 overall, 5-0 in league play. The Lady Falcon loss becomes their second-straight at home in conference play dropping to 8-6, 3-2.
Limestone had control of the first 20 minutes until Pfeiffer started clawing their way back beginning at the halfway point of the period. A triple by Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) cut the hosts’ deficit down to three until West and Maria Young (Asheville, NC) quickly boosted the Saints back to a nine-point lead with a jumper and long-range three-ball. After back-to-back three’s by Rhoney and Kaela Bellefeuil (Kernersville, NC) tied the contest at 28 with 2:59 remaining, a 12-5 Limestone run led by Young closed out the first half leading to a seven-point lead at the break.
Pfeiffer hung around during the first half of the second getting to within two after a pair of Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) free throws with 10:50 to go. Over that final stretch of time, the Saints totally took control outscoring the Lady Falcons 34-12 coasting to the 22-point win. A dozen of West’s 26 on the night came during that 10-plus minute span.
Young followed West with 21 on the night in front of Ashley Robinson’s (Whittier, NC) double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Limestone shot 55% in the win dominating the rebound category 48-29. The Saints also dished out 19 assists led by Stephanie Hayes’ (Hopkins, SC) seven.
The Lady Falcons were once again led by Cox and her 18 on the night that included a perfect 10-for-10 night at the charity stripe. Vontreece Hayes (Greensboro, NC) followed with 11 as the only other player in double-figures as Pfeiffer shot just 30% from the field.
