Conference Carolinas Places in Top Five Nationally and First in Southeast Region for ASR Ratings in NCAA II

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Conference Carolinas posted the fourth best NCAA Division II Academic Success Rate (ASR) as recently announced by the NCAA.  Conference Carolinas tied with the Great Lakes Valley Conference for fourth place among all NCAA DII leagues nationwide.  The conference also set the top score in the Southeast Region with their 79% ASR mark.

Commissioner, Dr. Alan Patterson noted, “Conference Carolinas members take seriously the conference slogan of Academics and Athletics Working Together.  Leaders of our communities tomorrow are found on our courts and fields today.  Conference Carolinas student athletes exhibit success in every aspect of campus life.”

The Academic Success Rate for all 22 Division II conferences was released at the NCAA Convention, which was held in Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 11-14. Data for the 2011 version of the ASR was compiled by following the progress of the 2001-2004 cohort. The national four-year ASR for all DII student-athletes increased one point from last year to 72 percent with Conference Carolinas student-athletes well above that national average.

The federal rate for the general student bodies at NCAA DII schools is 47%.  DII student-athletes perform significantly better coming in 9 points higher at 56%.

Along with the Division I Graduation Success Rate (GSR), the ASR is a tool used by the NCAA to measure the academic progress of student-athletes who compete. The NCAA developed the DII ASR at the request of member presidents who believed the federal graduation rate was not consistent from top to bottom. Both the DI GSR and the DII ASR take into account transfer students but given the partial-scholarship model of DII, the ASR also includes student-athletes not receiving athletically-related financial aid. The ASR also removes students from the group who left the institution while academically eligible to compete.
