Moore's Match-High 14 Kills Propel Men's Volleybal to 3-0 League Sweep of King

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Quentin Moore (Richmond, VA) registered a match-high 14 kills while the team defense posted 12 blocks as Pfeiffer University swept past King College 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Falcons to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in league play now in sole possession of first place. The loss drops the Tornado even at 4-4, losing their conference opener.

Both sides traded the match’s first nine points until a James Friddle (Cartersville, GA) kill put the visitors up early at 6-4. After trading the next several points, Pfeiffer would not fall behind for the remainder of the set after a Konstantin Weise (Berlin, GERMANY) kill and set error by the Tornado led to a 14-12 lead. A ball-handling error against the Falcons allowed King to tie the contest at 15-all before a David Frazee (West Palm Beach, FL) put down gave the Falcons the set one lead for good. Moore aided the final stretch with a pair of kills and service ace to clinch the opener.

Things went down to the wire in the middle stanza as a combo block by David Specian (Loxahatchee, FL) and Weise brought about a 15-15 tie while later grabbing a two-point, 18-16 lead on back-to-back kills by Weise. After a King timeout, a Moore ace and another Brophy kill, Pfeiffer found themselves up 20-16 in the second set. Friddle would temporarily rally the Tornado back with a pair of kills for a 22-20 score before three Moore kills of the final five plays allowed the Falcons to take a 2-0 match lead.

Pfeiffer had complete control in the final set as a pair of Frazee blocks with Brophy and Specian, helped put the Falcons up 10-7 before a pair of King errors and yellow card resulted in a 13-7 lead. Friddle would try to single-handedly bring King back, but finals kills from Brophy and Moore would help seal the sweep for Pfeiffer.

Moore led the way with his 14 kills hitting .409 in the match. Brophy and Weise each finished one kill shy of double-digits while Specian assisted 38 times. Moore completed a volleyball version of a double-double adding 10 digs on defense while recording two solo blocks.

Friddle paced the Tornado with 10 kills hitting .412 having little help as King hit just .095 as a unit. Justin Crane (Richmond, VA) added 21 assists while Friddle and Ned Parker (Richmond, VA) each had a team-high five digs.

Next up for the Falcons will be a road trip north to Mount Olive on Tuesday night. First serve is set to fly at 7:00 p.m. with the Trojans.
