Men's Volleyball Rallies from 2-0 Down at Mount Olive; Win Set Five Twice to Maintain First Place in League Standings

Box Score

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - After dropping the first two sets 25-19, Pfeiffer University rallied to win set three, four and set five twice to score a 3-2 (19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14, 16-14) comeback victory at Mount Olive College in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action on Tuesday night. The Falcons win their third-straight moving to 3-1 overall, staying atop the league standings at 3-0, while sending the Trojans to their sixth-straight loss dropping to 2-8, 1-1.

With a one-point lead and match point on their side, Pfeiffer looked to have put down the final kill of the night to secure the comeback win for the first time. However, after a line judge had called the ball in down in front of her, the up official over-ruled her decision to give the Trojans late life.

That final kill would have come off a kill by David Frazee, but instead turned a 15-13 win into a 14-14 tie with Mount Olive scoring three out of the last four points. Caleb Brophy and Quentin Moore would register the game's final kills to hold on for the 16-14 win. Four early errors led to a 7-1 Falcon lead in the fifth set before Mount Olive made their late comeback attempt.

Errors of their own plagued the Falcons in the first two sets before getting back on track thanks to a 6-0 lead to start set three all on Mount Olive errors. Leading for the entire third, Mount Olive got to within two at 20-18 on a kill by Lukas Hoelzl, but a following service error and put down by Moore sent the Falcons back up four. Pfeiffer would stave off the sweep with a 25-20 win.

The Falcons kept momentum going into the fourth owning the Trojans with a 25-14 win to force a fifth and decisive set. Pfeiffer took control after the one and only kill of the night needed by setter David Specian put the visitors up 10-8. Scoring the next five points, the Falcons closed out the set on a 15-6 run to set up the deciding contest.

Moore led the Falcons with 15 kills on the night followed by Brophy's even dozen. Specian set the Falcons up a match-high 49 times in the win while Brophy and Mark Hess each had 12 and 10 digs respectively on defense. The Pfeiffer defense limited to a .056 hitting percentage in set three followed by back-to-back negatives to secure the win. Alex Rivero paced the Trojans with 18 kills.

Next for the Falcons will be a trip to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday for a pair of matches in Virginia. Host EMU will be up first at 10:00 a.m. followed by Philly Biblical at 12:30 p.m.
