February 14, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) and Jodie Lemons (Madison, NC) combined for 51 of Pfeiffer University’s points on Wednesday night during an 80-68 win over visiting Queens in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action inside the Merner Gym. The crucial win moves the Lady Falcons to 12-11, 7-7 in league play remaining one back of Coker for the final playoff spot in the east while the Royals fall to 8-15, 6-8 dropping two games back.
A pair of Lemons and Cox three’s quickly put Pfeiffer on top early by six until a 7-0 run by Queens immediately put the visitors up by one. Triples by Lemons and Shelley Reese (Brown Summit, NC) put the hosts back up four, 21-17 at the midway point of the first until a Cox three again capped off a 10-0 run giving Pfeiffer a 33-21 lead with 6:36 to play.
Trailing by as eight with just 2:28 before the break, Queens started a mini-rally to finish off the first half on a 9-2 run with a pair of Sarah Myatt (Burlington, NC) free throws and jumpers would slice the lead down to one, 40-39, at the recess.
On back-to-back occasions early in the second, the Royals’ Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, NC) would tie the contest with layups until an easy lay in by Pfeiffer’s Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) gave the Lady Falcons a lead for good with 15:29 remaining.
Lemons would go on to score six points in an eight-play span covering just under two minutes for Pfeiffer while final conversions from the charity stripe by Lemons, Vontenea Williams (Granite Falls, NC) and Rhoney would lock up a 12-point win for the Lady Falcons.
Cox continued her strong player of the year candidacy dropping a game-high 27 shooting 50% with seven rebounds and four blocks. Lemons added 24 in the midst of a perfect 9-for-9 night at the free throw line. Pfeiffer drained 11 three’s on the night shooting 42% from long distance, 43% from the field and 83% from the line. The Lady Falcons defense held Queens to just 35% shooting as Battle led the way with her 26. The Royals did hold a big 53-37 advantage in team boards.
Pfeiffer will return to Merner Gym on Saturday night hosting King at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Falcons remain one game back of Coker for the final spot in this year’s conference tournament with three games left, including the home finale against Coker.
