Lake Erie Uses Four Goals in the First and Fourth Quarters to Upset #10 Men's Lacrosse 11-8

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Visiting Lake Erie College would post four goals in the opening and closing quarters to upset 10th-ranked Pfeiffer University 11-8 in non-conference men’s lacrosse on Saturday afternoon. The Storm, backed by five goals from Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, ONTARIO) win their 2012 opener while the Falcons even to 1-1.
The Storm’s Josh Becker (Salamanca, NY) started scoring on the day with a man-up goal at the 7:08 mark of the first quarter. After Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL) and Tucker Hammock (Marietta, GA) tallied back-to-back to make it 2-1, a Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, BRITISH COLUMBIA) strike and two back-to-back by MacGregor Johnson (Nanaimo, BRITISH COLUMBIA) would put the Storm on top 4-2 after one.
In the second, the Falcons got to within one on Lutes’ second of the day unassisted 1:32 in while Bal and Tarte made it 6-3 for the visitors. Tarte’s man-up goal was the first of for him on the day starting at the 4:08 point of the second. James Shepherd (St. John, NEW BRUNSWICK) would close out the first half scoring with his man-up goal with 61 ticks left.
Bal would register the lone third quarter goal on an assist from Adam Bakular-Evans (Courtenay, BRITISH COLUMBIA) before Tarte would single-handedly take over for the Storm in the fourth.
After Pfeiffer’s Justin Rose (Rochester, NY) scored to make it a 7-5 game just over two minutes into the final period, Tarte went on to hit for four-straight in a 3:22 span that saw Lake Erie increase its lead to 11-5. Lutes, Rose and Hammock would each hit again late over the final 5:52 for the Falcons.
Tarte led with his five goals on the day followed by Bal’s three. Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, SASKATCHEWAN) and Becker would each record four assists. Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, OH) would stop 10 Falcon shots in net for the win. Lutes paced Pfeiffer with his three goals while Hammock and Rose each had two. Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, NY) would make 14 saves in net.
The Storm out-shot Pfeiffer 37-26 while scooping up 39 groundballs to the Falcons’ 27. Each team committed 23 turnovers while Lake Erie turned 11 Pfeiffer penalty minutes into four goals including two in the final period.
