Women's Lacrosse Lets Go of Large First Half Lead in 19-18 Defeat at Lenoir-Rhyne

Box Score

HICKORY, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne’s Hayley Beattie scored her fifth goal of the day with 30 seconds left as the host Bears knocked off Pfeiffer University 19-18 in non-conference women’s lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium. The Bears even to 2-2 on the year while the Lady Falcons level out at 1-1.

Katherine Athens’s fourth of the day put Pfeiffer up 18-17 with 7:01 to play on a free position shot while the Bears’ Stevie Dellinger scored the game-tying goal with 3:22 to play. Beattie would then connect on the game-winner unassisted in the match’s final minute.

Pfeiffer took a commanding 7-1 lead earlier in the first half as Sarah Daly and Shannon Bonnel each scored twice to put the Lady Falcons up a half-dozen just 8:21 into the Saturday matinee. Bonnel would later add two more strikes to make it a 10-3 game while Athens tallied two more in the final seven minutes helping Pfeiffer to a 15-10 halftime lead.

Two Beattie goals in a 43-second span to start the second would start the Lenoir-Rhyne comeback while Beattie again was in the midst of four-in-a-row by the Bears to tie the contest 17-all leading up to Athens’ go-ahead goal with seven minutes to play.

Natalie Marvin, along with Athens and Bonnel, would each finish with four goals on the day. Pfeiffer put up two fewer shots than Lenoir-Rhyne with 33 on the day while the Bears took 23 of the 39 draw controls in the match.

Pfeiffer gets back to action on Thursday afternoon hosting Gannon at N.E. Lefko Field beginning at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
