Coker Scores Five of Six in Last Three Frames, Come Back for 6-4 and Series Win over Baseball on Sunday
March 11, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Coker College scored five of their six runs over the final three innings to claim a 6-4 victory over Pfeiffer University in the rubber-game of a three-game Conference Carolinas series on Sunday afternoon. The win pushes the Cobras to 14-12 overall, 7-5 in league play while sending the Falcons to 13-10, 5-4.
Coker had the first and last laugh on Sunday scoring their first run of the day in the second on a bases-loaded walk by Chad Nader (Rock Hill, SC). A single and two hit-by-pitches led to the Cobras initial run. Pfeiffer would respond just a half-inning later with a four-spot thanks to a two-run single by Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) and a two-run double to right by Kevin Price (Asheville, NC).
Walks would again come back to haunt the Falcons in the seventh as a leadoff single by Rob Quattrock (Holtsville, NY) and back-to-back free passes to Nader and Jake Frazier (Indian Harbor Beach, FL) loaded the bases with no outs. After a wild pitch moved runners up 90 feet and got the Cobras to within two, an infield-single and throwing error on the same play led to Coker’s second run of the frame and a 4-3 game. A Keith Wolf (O’Fallon, IL) sacrifice-fly to center would eventually plate Frazier with the game’s tying run.
Insurance in the form of a Frazier groundout to second in the eighth and two-out single to left by Fico Kondla (Miami, FL) in the ninth gave Cobras the final 6-4 margin. Four of Coker’s six runs on the day started with either a hit by pitch or base on balls. After the four-run Falcon second, Cobra starter Andrew Goot (Oldsmar, FL) found his groove allowing just one hit over the final seven frames. Goot would go the distance allowing four runs, only two earned on five hits with four strikeouts.
Pfeiffer will get back on the diamond Wednesday heading to Brevard for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with the Tornados before hosting North Greenville next weekend in league play.
