Russell Provides Pitching and Hitting During Game One Win; Softball Settles for Split with WVSU

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Host Pfeiffer University and visiting West Virginia State University split a non-conference softball twinbill on Thursday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Lady Falcons scored a walk-off, 5-4 eight-inning victory in game one while the Yellow Jackets needed just five innings in game two notching a 9-1 win. Pfeiffer improves to 14-19 overall while WVSU moves to 17-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) would knot the contest at four with a RBI-single to right scoring Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC). Later in the frame, Lindsey Russell (Huntersville, NC) would provide the walk-off with her single to left that plated pinch-runner Rebecca Foil (Raleigh, NC) with the game-winning run.

Early action saw Pfeiffer score three in the home half of the first after WVSU scored an early run in their half. Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) picked up the first RBI scoring Emily Workman (Vale, NC) with her groundout to second while Russell secured the first of her two RBI on the day with a single back up the middle to bring home Jackson. Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) rounded out the frame with run-scoring single to left.

The Yellow Jackets would score single runs in the third and fourth frames to help send the contest into extra innings while taking a brief lead with a quick run in the top of the eighth. Russell also picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Falcons tossing all eight frames.

In game two, WVSU struck early and often starting with three in the first before Pfeiffer pushed across their lone run with a Julianna Bullington (Ararat, NC) sacrifice fly to right. The Yellow Jackets would add one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to aid the contest ending early. WVSU collected 15 hits in the win while Dew and Amber Brame (Linwood, NC) picked up the only two hits for Pfeiffer.
