March 26, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Pfeiffer University's offensive struggles continued on Monday as visiting King College swept a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader at Jack Ingram Field. The Tornado doubled up the Lady Falcons 6-3 in game one while using a grand slam in a 4-0 nightcap victory. King moves to 16-10 overall, 5-5 in league play while Pfeiffer drops to 14-23, 4-8.
Cassie Ringstaff started things off with a RBI-single in the top of the first to get King on the board early. In a three-run third, Cora Milliken delivered the big hit with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. Pfeiffer got on the board in the bottom half of the third on an Emily Workman single that scored Melanie Conklin.
After another RBI picked up by Ringstaff and Milliken in the fourth, the Lady Falcons final pair of runs came in the seventh on a Julianna Bullington solo homer and RBI-single from Mikaela Strickland after an Ashlee Ellen double. Hannah Light picked up the first of her two wins on the day with a complete game effort striking out five.
In game two, Stephanie Rodriguez and Christina Melcher posted one-out singles while Milliken loaded the bases on a free pass. Fallon Thomas came up with the big blow blasting a grand slam for the four Tornado runs in the third.
Pfeiffer best chance to score came in the sixth with Andrea Wagner reaching on an error and Conklin getting aboard with a single. An ensuing fly out, fielder's choice and groundout by Light would end the threat. Light was even better in game two pitching a two-hit shutout adding two more strikeouts.
Pfeiffer will look to bust out of their slump hosting Queens on Wednesday afternoon. Game one's first pitch will be delivered at 3:00 p.m.
