Melesh's Five Goals Help Second Half Comeback as Women's Lacrosse Upsets #12 Florida Southern 13-10
March 31, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Trailing by two at halftime, host Pfeiffer University put home nine second half goals to upset #12 Florida Southern College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Lady Falcons to 7-5 on the year while the Mocs fall to 7-3.
Florida Southern would cash in on the first two and last four goals of the first half, three by Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, MD) to hold their halftime edge. In between, Liz Melesh (Annapolis, MD) and Shannon Bonnel (Mechanicsville, MD) each scored two goals apiece back-to-back for Pfeiffer’s four in the first half.
Sarah Daly (New Market, MD) and Rachel Hebberd (Golden, CO) got second half scoring underway to tie the contest at 6-6. Each team would trade a quick string of two-straight goals, Melesh and Hebberd hitting again for Pfeiffer, to make it an eight-all game with 20:15 left. After another Hoover tally for Florida Southern, Melesh would start and finish a set of four-straight goals by the Lady Falcons to provide the difference. Katherine Athens (Huntingtown, MD) and Bonnel would register their final goals during that stretch while Haley Gourdie (Clermont, FL) cashed in the last goal of the day with 2:49 left.
Pfeiffer gets back to action on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. hosting nationally-ranked Limestone for a first-place showdown in Conference Carolinas. The winner will have sole possession of first place and a likely #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Live stats will be available at http://www.gofalconsports.com.
