Long Balls Doom Softball as Wingate Records Tuesday Twinbill Sweep 6-3, 4-3
April 3, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Falling behind early in game one while succumbing to a three-run frame in game two, Pfeiffer University dropped both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader to Wingate University 6-3 and 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon. The pair of wins pushes the Bulldogs to 23-19 overall while the Lady Falcons drop to 15-28.
Wingate immediately got on the board in the first frame of game one as Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, NC) blasted a three-run shot to left after Alexis Burrell (Rocky Mount, NC) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Ann Sautter’s (Scottsdale, AZ) single to center. In the third, a Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, NC) RBI-double would make it 4-0 before a Burrell run-scoring two-bagger pushed the lead to five in the sixth.
After a final run in the seventh on Brittany Owens’ (Greenville, NC) double down the left field line, Pfeiffer’s Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) would belt a three-run shot to straight-away center accounting for the Lady Falcons three runs. Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) and Ashlee Ellen (Jacksonville, FL) were on the base paths for Patterson with a leadoff single and fielder’s choice. Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, VA) would score the first two of her two wins on the day allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with four strikeouts.
Loudermilt started game two scoring with a double to left-center to get the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the third. Pfeiffer bats finally responded with three in the bottom half of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) began with a double down the left field line while moving to third on Andrea Wagner’s (Wauseon, OH) sacrifice bunt. Emily Workman (Vale, NC) would knot the contest at 1-1 with her RBI-single up the middle to score Jackson starting a string of three-straight hits for the Lady Falcons. After singles from Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) and Conklin loaded the bases, Patterson delivered again with a two-run double off the fence in right-center to put the hosts up a pair.
Wingate’s three-run rally in the fifth began with a fielding error and eventual RBI-single from Hayley Whitley (Monroe, NC). Two pitches later, designated player Joya Wortham (Creedmoor, NC) smacking a two-run homer to left to provide the final pair of runs needed for the Bulldogs 4-3 win. Sautter led Wingate with a 4-for-7 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored while Paul again got the complete game win allowing three runs on seven hits.
The Lady Falcons are right back on the diamond Wednesday afternoon traveling to Belmont Abbey for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
