Men's Volleyball Secures First-Ever Regular Season Title; Earn #1 Seed and Home Court Advantage throughout Upcoming Playoffs
April 11, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė For the first time in school history, the Pfeiffer University menís volleyball team has officially clinched a regular season championship after Limestoneís loss to Mount Olive on Saturday. The Falcons, who will be the #1 seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas tournament and have home court advantage throughout, currently stand 18-6 overall, 8-1 in league play with their regular season finale coming up on Wednesday against Barton.
The record-setting season began with an 11-game win streak after a season-opening loss to Ball State. Arguably the best match and victory of the season came at Mount Olive just four contests into the season with a comeback 3-2 victory after dropping the first two sets on the road. That match was the only five set match during the 11-game streak.
The menís title becomes the first for Pfeiffer since the womenís volleyball team did it during their own record-setting season in 2008. The last non-volleyball squad to bring home a regular season conference title was womenís basketball during the 2006-2007 campaign.
After the season finale against Barton, Pfeiffer will host a semifinals match against Lees-McRae on Sunday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. If the top-seeded Falcons move on, they would host the winner of Mount Olive/Limestone at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night. Fans attending either tournament matches are encouraged the wear black during a playoffs blackout inside the Merner Gym.
