April 11, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Visiting Newberry College made a handful of gems defensively while taking advantage of four Pfeiffer University errors to claim a 6-2 victory in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves improve to 18-25 overall after four of their six runs became unearned while the Falcons fall to 21-20.
Newberry’s first run in the second inning started as a fielding error at third with two outs kept the inning alive for Albert Baur (Philadelphia, PA) to score. In the fourth, the Wolves would post a two-out rally as a hit by pitch to Josh McElwee (Andrews, SC) and walk to Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, FL) allowed Hunter Cox (Andrews, SC) to rope a two-run double down the left field line.
Making it 5-0 in the sixth, another error at the hot corner led to two more unearned runs as Sheridan recorded another run-scoring double while Cox picked up his third RBI with a groundout to second.
Pfeiffer would get on the board with single runs in the seventh and eighth as a Cole McGraw (Claremont, NC) fielder’s choice and wild pitch to score Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) accounted for the Falcons pair on the day. Newberry added insurance in the form of Baur reaching on an error in the ninth.
Wolves starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, SC) got the win with a fantastic seven innings of work allowing an unearned run with a pair of hits and five strikeouts. Eric Shuford (Shelby, NC) picked up the tough-luck loss for the Falcons also tossing seven frames allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.
The Falcons will now move on to their final home series of the 2012 season with three game against Mount Olive. Saturday’s doubleheader with live stats at http://www.gofalconsports.com begins at 12:00 p.m.
