Tuttle's Game Two Gem Helps Baseball Split with #4 Mount Olive; Snap Trojans 22-Game Win Streak

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Behind a complete game masterpiece by Bryan Tuttle in game two, Pfeiffer University was able to earn a split with #4 Mount Olive College in Conference Carolinas baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans improve to 33-7 overall, 19-3 in league play after a 14-4 game one win while the Falcons move to 22-21, 13-10 after a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. The game two win for Pfeiffer snapped Mount Olive’s 22-game win streak handing the Trojans their first loss since March 10th.

The Trojans got the offense rolling early and often in game one as two in the first on a fielding error and a fielder’s choice put the visitors up a pair. Pfeiffer would respond in the home half of the second with a Matt Wade RBI-single before he later scored on a Mount Olive error. Both teams would combine for a season-high 10 errors in the game.

After the Trojans grabbed a 3-2 on an Antonio Callaway solo homer to left in the third, the Falcons would immediately get the run back on a Dalton Lindley base hit to right. From there, a Mike Mercurio run-scoring triple started a four-run fifth while a Braden Reitano RBI-double started a five-run seventh. Aarin Sharpe would add one more for the Falcons with a groundout in the home sixth, but Mount Olive would add the five in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final 14-4 margin.

Reitano finished the opener 2-for-5 with four runs driven in while Matt Dillon pitched a solid eight innings allowing four runs, one earned with five strikeouts. Wade and Sharpe each had a pair of hits for the Falcons.

In game two, Tuttle would dominate the Mount Olive bats behind his complete game allowing one run on four hits while fanning eight Trojans. Tuttle would carry a perfect game into the fifth after recording six strikeouts during the first trip through the visitors lineup.

Wade started game two scoring with a solo blast in the third while Sharpe and Jacob Yates posted back-to-back doubles putting the Falcons up two. Yates would later score on a wild pitch to cap off the three-run third.

Geno Escalante would ruin Tuttle’s perfect game bid with a leadoff double in the fifth. Three hitters later, Escalante would score the Trojans lone run of game two on a weak groundout to short. Pfeiffer would quickly get that run back in their fifth on a Preston Lyon single to right-center. Ironically, neither team would commit an error in game two after the 10 in game one.

Both teams will square off again on Sunday in the rubber-game of the three-game set at Joe Ferebee Field. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m. and mark the final home game of the season for the Falcons.
