Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Peter Milliman Steps Down at Pfeiffer; Headed to Ivy League's Princeton
August 16, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University athletic director Mary Ann Sunbury has announced that Peter Milliman has resigned his position as head coach of the men’s lacrosse program effective immediately. Current assistant coaches Steve Torkington and Brad Conlon will assume all daily responsibilities as Pfeiffer undergoes a search for the next head coach. Milliman moves on to take a position with the Princeton Tigers, one of the most successful NCAA lacrosse programs in history.
The Tigers are coming off an 11-5 season where they went 6-0 in the Ivy League and finished the season with a 6-5 loss to Virginia in the NCAA playoffs. Princeton has won six national championships since 1992 and 26 Ivy League Championships overall. “The opportunity to be a part of the lacrosse program at Princeton University is a tremendous honor,” stated Milliman. “As tough as it is for me to leave Pfeiffer, I am really looking forward to this next step in my coaching career.”
Since arriving in Misenheimer four years ago, Milliman has amassed 37 victories and helped 13 players to earn 21 all-conference selections. This includes a program-record nine selections in 2012 as well as the last two conference Freshman of the Year recipients. In addition, he coached the programs first All-Americans since 2001 and was twice selected as the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. This comes after Milliman took over a team that was 4-22 in the previous two seasons.
“This was a very difficult decision for me to leave this group of guys who I have built such strong relationships with. I’m very proud to have been able to serve as the head coach at Pfeiffer and I would like to thank the administration and support staff for that opportunity.”
The Pfeiffer Falcons appear to be in great position as they are coming off consecutive trips to the Conference Carolinas championship and a school-record 12 wins in 2012. With the return of six all-conference honorees and almost 300 points from last year’s team, the 2013 season looks to be very promising.
“Pfeiffer has a very strong alumni base and they, along with the current staff, are dedicated to keeping the current momentum of the program moving forward,” commented Dr. Allen Snook, Associate Athletic Director. In a recent article by Lacrosse Magazine, Pfeiffer was ranked #10 in the country after closing out the 2012 season at #11 in the USILA polls.
