Men and Women's Cross Country Each Finish 5th at UNC-Wilmington's Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University men’s and women’s cross country teams travelled to the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk invitational for their second meet of the season with both teams finishing fifth. ECU swept the meet in both races with the women’s team putting up a perfect score of 15. East Carolina’s Antonia Palmer ran a 15:42 to win the men’s 5k, while his teammate Stacey Gonzalez placed first in her 5k race with an 18:54.

Weakened once again by injuries, the Lady Falcons depended on their strong freshman class putting up quick times. Freshman Alex Crouch, in her second collegiate race, broke into the top-20 individual runners, placing 16th with her 20:25. Freshman Trista Byers ran a 21:53 to come in 22nd. Fellow freshmen Cori Newton and Janna Featherstone placed close together, running 22:19 and 22:30 respectively. Junior Nina Ubabuike, closed out the team scoring for the day, finishing in 25:44.

Despite having an hour delay due to lightning, the Pfeiffer men’s team also had a strong race, running a 5k instead of the standard 8k like most collegiate races. Senior Will Oliver crushed the course, placing 14th with a 16:36. Freshmen Alex Freeze, running a 17:52 narrowed out teammate Brandon Garren, who finished a step behind in 17:54. Nathan Jarman, a fellow freshman, ran an 18:13, with junior Cody Jones finishing the team scoring with his 18:31. Freshman Nicholas Mabry (18:41) was close behind, with junior Cody Bivens (19:03) and sophomore Joseph Sutlive (19:08) following after. Junior Fred Travis (20:33) rounded out the team for the day.

The Falcons return to action on September 22nd for the Bulldog Stampede at Wingate University.
