CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University mens and womens cross country teams competed at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational on Friday afternoon. Competing in the college “Green” races, the men finished 6th while the women finished 12th. Wake forest won the men’s Green race and South Carolina took top spot in the women’s. Clemson and Virginia Tech claimed the titles in the Gold race.
The men were led by senior Will Oliver who set a new personal best in the 8k running a 26:53. Next for Pfeiffer was freshman Alex Freeze who finished in 28:23. Freeze was followed by two more freshman; Brandon Garren and Nathan Jarman finishing in 29:03 and 29:54 respectively. Junior Cody Bivens rounded out the scoring for Pfeiffer running a 30:25. The top seven included two more freshmen with Jesse Skidmore running just 10 seconds behind Bivens with a 30:35 in his first collegiate race, and Nicholas Mabry finishing at 30:59.
Coach Scott Nolt was excited about having all 12 runners in the race for the first time this season. "We may not all be 100% healthy yet, but we finally have everyone out there for practice and that’s been a great motivation with the depth we have this year,” said Nolt.
For the women, freshman Trista Byers led the way in the 6k race. Finishing in 26:30, Cori Newton was just 7 seconds behind. Justine Serje was third for Pfeiffer with a 28:20, running just her second race after a knee injury sidelined her earlier this season. Maia Black and Nina Ubabuike finished with 31:23 and 31:29.
Pfeiffer runs next Saturday morning at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro.
