Rodriguez Nets Overtime Game-Winner as Women's Soccer Advances to Tournament Semis with 2-1 Win over Queens
October 29, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Kayla Rodriguez’s (Beckley, WV) game-winning goal 3:06 into the first overtime period gave fourth-seeded Pfeiffer University a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Queens in the first round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas women’s soccer tournament. The Lady Falcons improve to 10-6-2 overall advancing to Thursday’s semifinals at Lees-McRae. The Royals see their 2012 season come to an end at 9-9-1.
Rodriguez would help start scoring on the day in the 22nd minute assisting Aaliyah Jackson’s (Statesville, NC) 12th goal of the season. Rodriguez would send a long pass ahead from midfield to Jackson, the league’s leading scorer in 2012, who broke past the last set of Royal defenders for a 1-0 Pfeiffer lead.
Drama would pick up late in the second half as Queens would score the equalizer in the 89th minute after receiving a red card to play a man down. After a Pfeiffer yellow card and red to Queens, Nadia Butt (Houston, TX) would corral the long pass to chip her shot up and just under the crossbar to help send the contest into overtime.
After both teams traded early possessions at midfield to start overtime, Rodriguez would snag a loose ball and dribble just into the box before firing her shot inside the left post connecting on the game-winner.
In regulation, Queens would have several other opportunities to tie the match at one apiece while Pfeiffer had quality chances for insurance with neither team being able to capitalize.
The Lady Falcons would outshoot Queens 17-12 overall holding a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Pfeiffer would hold a slight 4-3 advantage in corners while committing the only offsides call in the match. Britt Polly (Boca Raton, FL) would make a pair of saves in net for Pfeiffer, including one in the middle of a three-shot barrage by Queens 10 seconds apart in the 37th minute, while Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, VA) made five saves for the Royals.
