Women's Swimming Score First Win over Catawba in 12 Years with Big Afternoon; Men Finish Second to Nearby Rivals

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - For the first time in 12 years, the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons defeated Catawba College 135-127 in the Merner Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Falcons remain unbeaten in dual meets for the year at 5-0-1 while the Indians just squeaked out a victory on the men's side 155-103.

The ladies got things started off quickly with a victory in the first event consisting of the 200-yard medley relay. Yukina Onoda, Mary Rudolph, Daliya Spasova and Haley Carter scored the win by more than a second and a half. Hannah Finkernagel and Kate Galichenko kept the wins piling up for Pfeiffer in the 1,000 and 200 freestyle. Finkernagel won by more than 32 seconds while Galichenko clocked in at 2:01.34, more than three seconds better than Catawba.

Spasova and Jessica Burgess went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke before Catawba started to make a small comeback. Finkernagel got the Lady Falcons back on top after a 10-second victory in the 500 freestyle while Spasova and Galichenko followed suit in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

On the men's side, Nick Insley picked up the Falcons lone individual victory of the day in the 100 backstroke with a 54.51 second swim. Pfeiffer would stay with Catawba all afternoon despite just the one first place finish concluding nine other events in the second place position while two events consisted of finishes in second, third and fourth.

Pfeiffer has one more dual meet in the 2012-2013 regular season heading to Mars Hill in two weeks. The Falcons will then prepare and participate in the annual Bluegrass Mountain Conference Meet in Charlotte February 13-16.
