February 13, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- On Friday afternoon Pfeiffer defeated North Greenville University 10-2 in the first game of a double-header match-up and then 8-1 in the second game. The wins were thanks to a mix of good pitching and consistent hitting.
Game 1 – Pfeiffer 10, North Greenville 2
In game one, North Greenville jumped to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a homerun by designated hitter Derek Fulmer (Pelion, SC), but Falcon starter Ben Beard (Huntersville, NC) shut the Crusaders down right there and their lead was short lived.
Pfeiffer led off the bottom of the first with back to back homeruns by Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) and Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) to take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons added three runs in the second, two on a double by Shoemaker and another on a SAC fly by Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC).
In the third, Pfeiffer stretched their lead to 8-1 on a three-run homerun by Strickland giving him two on the game. But the scoring was not done there. In the fifth, the Falcons added two more runs after loading the bases on singles by Strickland, Shoemaker, and Zack Pou (Stanley, NC). Another single by Will Davis (New London, NC) brought home Strickland and a HBP by Dunn scored Shoemaker.
On the mound, Pfeiffer was led by Beard who picked up the win going six innings giving up one run while striking out six. Jason Brown (Walnut Cove, NC), Chuck Ingram (Richfield, NC), and Eric Shuford (Shelby, NC) all pitched an inning to close out the game.
At the plate, Strickland was 4-4 with two homeruns and four RBIs. Shoemaker was 3-3 with three RBIs and Pou was 4-4.
For the Crusaders, Grayson Smith (York, SC) took the loss going five innings giving up eight earned runs. Randy Stegall (Pauline, SC) and Fulmer led the Crusader bats going 2-2 and 2-4, respectively.
Game 2 – Pfeiffer 8, North Greenville 1
Game two remained scoreless until the third inning when Pfeiffer’s Tyler Smith (Locust, NC) led off with a walk and Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) followed with a homerun to left center. The Crusaders tried to fight back by scoring a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Jairo Mateo (Santo Domingo, DR) scoring Chris Harbit (Charleston, SC) off Falcon starter Jonathon McDaniel (Mocksville, NC).
Pfeiffer came back in during the bottom of the fourth and padded their lead scoring four runs while sending all nine batters to the plate. With one out, Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC) singled and Mike Green (Brandon, FL) singled to center. The Crusader centerfielder misplayed it allowing Marsh to score and Green to advance to third, who would later score on a wild pitch. With two-outs Lyon, Strickland, and Shoemaker walked, forcing North Greenville to go to the bullpen and bring in Daniel Goodnight (Ellenboro, NC). Goodnight gave up a two-run single to Pou.
In the fifth, Dunn led off with a double for the Falcons and Julian Medina (Glen Cove, NY) entered the game to pinch run for Dunn. Marsh grounded out to third then the first baseman under threw the throwback to third allowing Medina to score. Green singled, advanced to second on a Smith single, and then scored on a single by Lyon.
Crusaders starter Tanner Yarboro (Columbus, NC) took the loss going 3 2/3 innings giving up five earned runs. At the plate Fulmer, Mateo, and Anthony Foulk (Genoa, IL) picked up the only hits for North Greenville.
McDaniel picked up the win for Pfeiffer pitching a complete game, surrendering only one run on three hits. Lyon went 2-2 with a homerun and three RBIs to lead the Falcons. Green also chipped in going 2-3 with an RBI.
Pfeiffer and North Greenville return to action on Saturday at 12:00-noon for the final game in this weekend series.
