Men's Volleyball Sets New School-Record Hitting .557; Win Fifth-Straight with 3-0 League Sweep over Barton

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University men’s volleyball team set a new school-record hitting .557 on the night cruising to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-16) victory over Barton College in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action on Tuesday night. The win makes five-in-a-row for the Falcons, fourth-straight in league play improving to 5-1, 4-1. The Bulldogs remain winless on the year falling to 0-5, 0-4.
Pfeiffer jumped out to a comfortable 12-6 lead after a service ace from David Specian (Loxahatchee, FL) and kill from Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY). After each team traded a pair of service errors, Micah Bortner (Dallastown, PA) and Caleb Brophy (Mission Viejo, CA) scored back-to-back kills for the Falcons in front of another Specian ace for a 21-12 set. Bortner, along with Joe Supko (Irwin, PA), would put down the final two kills in the opening set giving Pfeiffer their 1-0 match lead.
In the middle stanza, Barton jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a kill from Chandler Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA) before the Falcons rallied back to grab a 13-9 lead thanks to a Mark Hess (Lebanon, PA) kill and another put down from Brophy. Pfeiffer then ran out on a 6-0 run with a pair of Brophy aces leading the way before Supko again had kills late in the set while Edelman delivered the final blow for a 25-14 set win and two-game lead for the Falcons.
Set three started with a 10-5 advantage for the Falcons after a Fabio Diniz (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) ace that forced a Bulldogs timeout. Kyle Landrigan (Delmar, NY), Sonny Hirini (Matamata, NEW ZEALAND) and Diniz would each pick up a kill in a four-play span while Kyle Mariano (Kendall Park, NJ) and Blake Dowdle (Farmington, NY) secured the match’s final kills as Pfeiffer completed its sweep with a 25-16 set three victory.
Pfeiffer’s team hitting percentage of .557 was led by Supko’s .857 as the sophomore picked up six kills in seven attempts. Bortner followed by hitting .667 while Brophy checked in at .625. Edelman and Diniz each had night’s hitting .571 while Landrigan came off the bench to hit .417 in the third set.
The Falcons will now step out of league play to head north this weekend traveling to University Park on Friday to battle #6 Penn State before heading over to St. Francis on Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m. with live stats being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
