Results vs. St. Andrews (2009-04-10 00:00:00)
April 10, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- On Saturday afternoon the Pfeiffer Falcons split a Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader with the visiting Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The teams traded ninth inning rallies to prevail in their respective games. The Knights scored six runs in the ninth to win 6-4 in game one and the Falcons scored two in the final inning to win the second game 14-13.
Game One – Pfeiffer 4, St. Andrews 6
Game one started on Friday afternoon and finished Saturday afternoon thanks to a three hour rain delay on Friday that postponed the conclusion of the game until Saturday. On Friday both starting pitchers held the bats at bay.
Pfeiffer scored one off of Knight starter Travis Lee (Frederick, MD) in the third. After a one-out single by Ryan Brown (Concord, NC), Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) reached on an error. Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) then doubled to score Brown, but Lee ended the threat there.
Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) started for the Falcons and was at his best. When the game stopped during the sixth he had thrown six innings allowing only three hits while striking out seven.
The Falcons had runners on first and second after consecutive singles by Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) and Will Davis (New London, NC) when the game was halted, but when the game resumed Lee once again worked out of trouble and did not allow a run to score that inning.
Pfeiffer added a run in the seventh when Josh Strickland brought Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) home with a SAC fly. Then the Falcons added two more in the eighth when Lyon added a two-run single.
Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, NC) relieved Fogleman when the game resumed and was cruising until the ninth when the Knights rallied for six runs on four hits to take a 6-4 lead. The big hits of the inning were a three run homerun by Josh Axelsen (St. Charles, IL) and a two run double by Michael Ficarro (Pine City, NY).
Lee returned to the mound in the ninth and shut the Falcons down to earn the win. He went nine innings giving up four runs on eleven hits. Ficarro led the Knights with two hits and two RBI while Axelson contributed a big three run homerun.
Fogleman took the no decision while McDaniel suffered the loss. McDaniel gave up six runs on five hits through three innings. At the plate Pou, Davis, Lyon, and Brown had two hits apiece for Pfeiffer.
Game Two – Pfeiffer 14, St. Andrews 13
Game two was a slugfest in which the teams traded big innings and another ninth inning rally.
Pfeiffer got on the board in the bottom of the first with four runs on six hits. Singles by Strickland and Shoemaker got the inning started. Davis then doubled to left center to bring home the pair. Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) tripled to left center to score Davis and then he scored on a RBI single by Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC).
SAPC scratched back in the second by scoring on an RBI single by Ivan Rodriguez (New York, NY) after a big Pfeiffer error that allowed the inning to continue.
The Knights jumped ahead when they scored eight runs in the third to take a 9-4 lead. Ethan Powell (Greenville, NC), Kyle Norris (Laurel Hill, NC), Axelson, Charles Weber (Concord, NC), Jeremy Fisher (Catonsville, MD), and Rodriguez all added RBI in the inning for SAPC.
Pfeiffer battled back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of its own. Lyon got the inning started with a single and later scored on a single by Strickland. After a Shoemaker walk, Pou lined over the left field wall to cut the lead to 9-8. The Falcons tied it up in the fourth on a solo shot by Lyon.
The Knights jumped ahead 12-9 in the sixth after a two run homerun by Norris and a solo homer by Axelson.
The seventh saw Pfeiffer chip away at the score after Brown scored on a wild pitch. SAPC got the run back in the top of the eighth after Weber singled home Axelson to take a 13-10 lead.
Pfeiffer again chipped away in the eighth when Davis singled to start the inning and was followed by a two-run homerun off the bat of Pearl.
Chris Russell (Chadbourn, NC) held the Knight bats at bay over three innings to set the stage for the ninth inning comeback by the Falcons.
Brown started the ninth with a single and after an error on a fielder’s choice Strickland reached. The Falcons had runners on first and second with nobody out. Shoemaker bunted the runners to third then after an intentional walk to Pou that loaded the bases, Davis singled home Brown to tie the score. Pearl hit a deep fly ball to center and brought Strickland home for the win.
Russell picked up the win for Pfeiffer. He went 3 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits. At the plate Strickland, Davis, Pearl, and Lyon had three hits, while Shoemaker and Brown added two apiece.
For the Knights, Fisher picked up the loss in relief. He went six innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Norris, Axelson, and Rodriguez had three hits for SAPC and Norris and Axelson each added a homerun.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday at Catawba with a scheduled start of 6:00 PM.
