Results vs. Belmont Abbey (2009-02-21 12:00:00)
February 21, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- On Saturday afternoon the Pfeiffer Falcons split their opening Conference Carolinas series with the visiting Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. Pfeiffer prevailed in the first game 2-1 behind a strong performance on the mound by Ben Beard (Huntersville, NC). The Abbey, led by Crusader starter Michael Raymond (Mount Holly, NC), followed with a 2-1 win in the late game.
Game 1 – Pfeiffer 2, Belmont Abbey 1
Ben Beard started on the mound for the Falcons in game one and shut down the Crusaders for six innings. Beard struck out seven batters in a row and did not allow a hit until Tyler McKenzie (Winston-Salem, NC) led off the seventh with a single to right.
The game remained scoreless until the third when Tyler Smith (Locust, NC) led off with a walk against Belmont Abbey starter Tyler Powell (Port Orange, FL). Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) followed with a single and advanced Smith to third, followed by Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) scoring Smith on an error.
The game stayed 1-0 until the seventh when McKenzie broke up the no-hitter with his single. McKenzie then stole second with two-outs and advanced to third on a throwing error. He ended up scoring the tying run on a wild pitch.
Pfeiffer got back on top in the bottom of the eighth when Lyon led off with a single and advanced to second on a Strickland sacrifice bunt. He scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch.
Ben Beard pitched seven strong innings, striking out 13 and giving up an unearned run, but picked up a no decision. Casey Smith (Kernersville, NC) pitched the eighth for the Falcons and marked the win. Andy Oliver (Cornelius, NC) pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two to pick up the save.
Preston Lyon and Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) both had two hits for the Falcons, while Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) added one of his own.
Powell pitched well for the Crusaders going 7 1/3 innings allowing only four hits and two runs, but he picked up the loss. McKenzie and Patrick Atwell (China Grove, NC) had the only hits for Belmont Abbey.
Game 2 – Pfeiffer 1, Belmont Abbey 2
Game two saw another pitching duel, but this time between Jonathon McDaniel (Mocksville, NC) for Pfeiffer and Michael Raymond for Belmont Abbey.
Pfeiffer jumped ahead early with a run in the first. With one out, Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) reached on a walk, stole second, and then scored on a RBI single by Will Davis (New London, NC).
The Falcon lead was short lived as the Crusaders tied the game in the top of the second when Danny Brion (Virginia Beach, VA) hit an opposite field homerun to tie the score at 1-1. The Abbey took the lead for good when Atwell and Josh Frazier (Lowell, NC) reached on one-out singles. Atwell scored on a SAC fly by Roland Rodriguez (Miami, FL).
Pfeiffer threatened to tie the score in the seventh when Brandon Rouse (Kinston, NC) singled and Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC) walked with one-out, but Zach Horne (Belmont, NC) came in for the visitors and ended the rally.
McDaniel picked up the loss going all seven innings giving up six hits and two earned runs. Davis and Rouse had the only hits for the Falcons in game two.
Raymond took the win by going 6 1/3 innings giving up only two hits and one earned run. Horne came in during the seventh to pick up the save. Brion and Atwell led the Crusaders with two hits apiece.
The two teams will square off tomorrow in the finale of the series at 1:00PM.
