Men's Volleyball Nearly Completes Epic Comeback Before Falling to Mount Olive 3-2

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Mount Olive College lost a 2-0 lead and fought off a Pfeiffer University comeback to take a 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 16-25, 15-11) victory in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action on Wednesday night inside the Merner Gym. The Trojans improve to 10-3 overall, 9-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 8-4, 7-2.

Mount Olive owned the first two sets until Pfeiffer rallied facing match point in set three. The Trojans saw a 24-22 lead, match point and the serve. A service error and back-to-back attack errors by the Trojans saw a two-point lead shift to a one point Pfeiffer lead 25-24. After a kill by Adam Miracle (Cincinnati, OH) knotted the contest at 25, Pfeiffer’s Sonny Hirini (Matamata, NEW ZEALAND) ripped off back-to-back kills for a 27-25 victory and a new 2-1 match.

The fourth set was all Pfeiffer as a kill by Caleb Brophy (Mission Viejo, CA) put the hosts up 11-6 while a Hirini ace moments later pushed the lead out to 16-11. Two more Trojan errors and a Kyle Landrigan (Delmar, NY) kill pushed the advantage to 23-15 until a final kill from Joe Supko (Irwin, PA) and attack error by Mount Olive squared the match at two sets apiece after a 25-16 set four win.

Both teams went back-and-forth in set five until a block by Richard Hesse (Muenchen, GERMANY) and Angel Dache (La Havana, CUBA) gave the Trojans a crucial two-point lead at 9-7. A pair of Tim Ebbecke (Commack, NY) kills with an ace from Alex Rivero (Miami, FL) mixed in, Mount Olive survived the dreaded five-set loss when leading by two holding on for the 15-11 victory.

Brophy would lead the Falcons with 16 kills hitting .345 in the loss. Landrigan would pick up 11 kills for Pfeiffer off the bench. David Specian (Loxahatchee, FL) contributed 51 assists while Mark Hess (Lebanon, PA) popped up a match-high 10 digs. Mount Olive would hit .323 in the match just a hair better than the Falcons’ .313.
