Charlotte 49ers Receive Scare from Falcon Baseball Before Holding On for 7-4 Win
February 21, 2013
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Host Charlotte used a four-run second inning to power a 49ers 7-4 victory over Pfeiffer University in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons took on division one's Niners as a last minute addition to the schedule as both teams were snowed out last weekend. Charlotte improves to 3-1 overall while the Falcons fall to 1-10.
The Niners four-run second was the first bit of scoring on the day as a pair of fielder's choices led to the first two runs while an infield bunt single and single to left brought home the other two runs.
Pfeiffer got on the board just an inning later as Johnny Brown, Jr. took the first pitch in the top of the third hitting a towering solo home run down the left field line to cut the lead to 4-1.
A RBI-double in the Charlotte fourth pushed the lead to 5-1 before Jon Gray belted a solo shot on the second pitch he saw in the Pfeiffer sixth. Charlotte would add runs in the sixth and eighth for insurance as the Niners went on for the 7-4 victory.
Jacob Yates led the Falcons going 3-for-4 at the plate with Daniel Furr collecting two hits in his four plate apperances. Charlotte starter Tyler Barnette tossed eight innings allowing the two runs on six hits striking out a career high nine in the win.
Pfeiffer is scheduled to play a three-game weekend series at North Georgia on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Weather permitting, game one on Friday is set for 5:00 p.m. with live stats being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
