Results vs. Anderson (2009-03-08 13:00:00)
March 8, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- Pfeiffer University finished off the three game sweep of visiting #28 Anderson University on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons used a walk-off homerun from Will Davis (New London, NC) in the 12th inning to win the finale 3-2. The Falcons improve to 16-5-1 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas play, while the Trojans fall to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
The game remained scoreless until Anderson broke through with two runs in the fourth inning. Derek Hipp (Saluda, SC) led off with a double, then after a strike out and groundout Trent Still (Williston, SC) singled to right to score Hipp. Hipp later scored on an error off the bat of Andrew Davis (Asheboro, NC).
Pfeiffer answered quickly when they scored two runs of their own to notch the score at 2-2. Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) led off by reaching on an error. Will Davis followed with a single. With runners on first and second and one out, Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC) singled to bring home Davis. Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) added an RBI single of his own before Trojan starter Blair Carson (Anderson, SC) got out of trouble.
After the teams traded two-run innings, Carson and Pfeiffer starter Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) each held the other team at bay. Neither team could manage to get a runner past second base from the fifth inning until the eighth.
In the eighth, Casey Smith (Kernersville, NC) allowed a leadoff single to Still. Andy Oliver (Cornelius, NC) then came in relief and gave up a single to Andrew Davis (Asheboro, NC). After an intentional walk to load the bases, Oliver struck out a batter. He then got a groundball to Zack Strickland (Liberty, NC) and he threw home to Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC). Dunn turned and threw to Will Davis at first and the Falcons were out of trouble with the 5-2-3 double play.
Cory Welch (Anderson, SC) relieved Carson in the tenth and threw a perfect tenth and eleventh. Oliver matched him by holding the Trojans hitless over the last four innings.
That set the stage for Will Davis. He led off in the twelfth and sent a one-one pitch over the left field fence to give the Pfeiffer the 3-2 win and finish off the sweep.
Nick Fogleman started for Pfeiffer and went six innings. He struck out eight and allowed only one earned run. Andy Oliver picked up the win in relief going five innings allowing only one hit while striking out seven.
At the plate the Falcons were led by Davis who went 3-5 with that memorable homerun. Pearl, Marsh and Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) each pitched in a hit for Pfeiffer.
Carson started and took the no decision for the Trojans going nine innings giving up five hits and surrendering two runs. Cory Welch took the loss. He tossed two plus innings giving up only one hit and unfortunately it was the homerun.
The Trojans were led at the plate by Still who had two hits and a RBI.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Georgia and face nationally ranked Georgia College & State. The first game is scheduled for 6:00PM. The teams will play another game on Wednesday with a scheduled start of 3:00PM.
