Lady Falcon Softball Settles for Split with Davis & Elkins with 2-0 Game Two Victory

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. For the fourth-straight doubleheader, the Pfeiffer University softball team had to battle back from a tough game one loss to earn a split with a game two victory as the Lady Falcons and the visiting Senators from Davis & Elkins each won a non-conference softball matchup on Friday afternoon. The Lady Falcons slide to 7-9 on the year while the Senators move to 6-2.

In game one, Sam Jarmusch (Colfax, NC) was taking care of business cruising through the first six innings. Offensively, Jarmusch blasted a leadoff homer to left-center in the top of the second to give herself a 1-0 cushion in the circle. In four of the first six frames, Jarmusch worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning and had retired 11-in-a-row carrying her 1-0 lead into the seventh.

Davis & Elkins scored their two runs in the top of the seventh as Kayla Whoolery (Leesburg, VA) led off with a single to center and move to second on a wild pitch. The key play for the Senators came just moments later as Mallory Wishard (Waynesboro, PA) reached on a dropped fly ball to keep the rally alive with first and third, nobody out.

As Wishard stole second, the Lady Falcons tried to nail Whoolery leading away from third, but the ensuing throw ended up against the fence as Whoolery plated the game-tying run. Katelyn Norton (Virginia Beach, VA) later capped the inning with a RBI-double to give the Senators a 2-1 lead.

Pfeiffer tried to rally in their seventh with a leadoff single and stolen base by Khristin Isley (Asheboro, NC) but Davis & Elkins starter Alanna Jones (Oakdale, CA) would get two of the three final outs via strikeout to end the game. Jones got the win allowing just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts over her seven innings of work.

In game two, the Lady Falcons would plate both of their runs in third and let Lindsey Russell (Hunterville, NC) do the rest inside the circle. Jaclyn Boever (Bostic, NC) began the third with a strikeout, but reached first on a throwing error after a dropped third strike. Russell would then single Boever to third on a hard push bunt single to second. After Russell swiped second, a wild pitch would give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead before an Emily Workman (Vale, NC) bloop single to left brought home Russell with insurance.

Russell would take care of the rest tossing 6.2 innings on Friday blanking Davis & Elkins on five hits with five strikeouts. Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) would get the save after the Senators tried to mount a rally in the seventh once again. Norton led off the frame with a fly ball to center which resulted in what turned out to be a potential game-saving catch by Workman. Ashley Dove (Mathias, WB) and Carissa Dunn (Modesto, CA) would post a pair of two-out singles, but Brown would come in to get a final groundball back to the circle allowing the Lady Falcons to earn a DH split with a 2-0 game two victory.

Pfeiffer will now look forward to the 2013 Conference Carolinas opener on Sunday traveling to King for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Tornado. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
