MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Tied 6-6 heading into the final 15 minutes, the Pfeiffer University men’s lacrosse team would pitch a fourth quarter shutout on defense as the 10th-ranked Falcons defeating visiting Dominican (CA) 9-6 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The victory sends the Falcons to 6-1 on the year while the Penguins drop down to 2-3.

Dominican held a 2-1 lead after the first period thanks to goals from Jake Fritz (Issaquah, WA) and Cam Evangelho (Santa Margarita, CA) just 38 seconds apart midway through the period. Evangelho’s goal was scored in a man-up situation as the Penguins netted three of their six goals with the extra attacker. Pfeiffer’s Robert Hope (Peterborough, ONTARIO) would get the Falcons on the board with 5:58 remaining after a quick pass from Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL).

Hope’s tally to end the first would start a string of four-straight for the Falcons as James Shepherd (St. John, NEW BRUNSWICK) and Cole Sheen (Edmonton, ALBERTA) put the hosts up 3-2 as Hope assisted on both strikes. Steven Tilmon (Orlando, FL) would give the Falcons a 4-2 lead with 2:20 remaining before the break while the Penguins’ Grant Clifford (Portland, OR) made it a one-goal deficit at the half hitting with 101 seconds remaining.

Dominican would strike fast opening the third quarter as Kevin Powers (Issaquah, WA) scored just 39 seconds in to square the contest at four, before the Penguins grabbed a 5-4 advantage on another man-up goal by Evangelho with Powers picking up the helper. Elliot Gilbert (Corning, NY) scored the equalizer at the 7:33 mark of the third before Mike Triolo (Toronto, ONTARIO) put the Falcons back on top 6-5. Fritz would tally the Penguins’ final goal of the day, man-up, with 38 seconds left in the third.

In the fourth, Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, NY) would anchor the defense stopping five shots by the Penguins. Pfeiffer goals came from Hope with 7:40 remaining while Lutes hit for the final two in the game’s closing minutes.

Lutes and Hope would each finish the day with a pair of goals and assists in the win while Kirk would make 11 saves in net. Dominican held a slight advantage in shots 29-25 but trailed 22-17 in shots on goal. Groundballs turned out even at 22 apiece while the Penguins had the upper hand in face-offs controlling 12 of the 18.

The Falcons will now take a week off before traveling to Jacksonville, Florida for a neutral site matchup with Florida Southern at 1:00 p.m.
