Results vs. Bloomsburg (2009-03-05 14:30:00)
March 5, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- Pfeiffer University played host to Bloomsburg University on Thursday and used seven late runs to beat the Huskies 8-1. The Falcons improve to 13-5-1 overall, while the Huskies are handed their first loss and drop to 4-1.
The Falcons jumped ahead in the first when Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) walked and then advanced to second when Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) reached on an error. After a passed ball Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) used a sacrifice fly to score Shoemaker and give Pfeiffer the early 1-0 lead.
Pfeiffer’s freshman starter Jason Brown (Walnut Cove, NC) held Bloomsburg at bay until the fourth. With two outs Tyler Gansner (Lancaster, PA) singled and was followed by a walk by Mike Austin (Dallastown, PA). With runners on first and second, a Carlos Medina (Lititz, PA) single to left scored Gansner.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until Pfeiffer added two runs in the sixth. Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC) singled with one-out. Then, with two-outs Will Davis (New London, NC) added an infield single in which Marsh scored on an overthrow. Zack Strickland (Liberty, NC) followed the Davis single with one of his own, which was then followed by another single by Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) that scored Davis.
The Falcons stretched out their lead to 6-1 by scoring three runs in the seventh. Shoemaker and Pou led off with singles and after a fielder’s choice Marsh brought Shoemaker home with another single. Brandon Rouse (Kinston, NC) followed with a hit to load the bases. Davis added a single of his own to bring home Dunn. Zack Strickland (Liberty, NC) finished off the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Pfeiffer was not done and in the eighth Pou reached on a two-out single and following up was Dunn who connected for a long homerun to left giving Pfeiffer the 8-1 advantage.
Jason Brown picked up his first career win in his first start of his Pfeiffer career. He pitched a solid seven innings scattering four hits and giving up only one run. Casey Smith (Kernersville, NC) and Andy Oliver (Cornelius, NC) each tossed scoreless innings in relief.
At the plate Pfeiffer was led by a collection of hitters who added two hits apiece. Josh Strickland, Zach Pou, Ethan Marsh, Brandon Rouse and Will Davis all had two hits for the Falcons. Jesse Dunn pitched in three RBIs in the win.
For the visiting Huskies, starting pitcher Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ) took the loss while tossing 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and three runs. At the plate Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights, PA), Gansner, Austin, Medina, and Philipps had the hits for Bloomsburg.
Pfeiffer returns to action this weekend with an important conference series against Anderson University in Misenheimer. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12-noon and a single game on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
