Results vs. Anderson (2009-03-07 12:00:00)
March 7, 2009Misenheimer, NC -- Saturday afternoon saw the Pfeiffer baseball team take two games from the visiting #28 Anderson Trojans. The Falcons used strong pitching efforts and clutch two-out hitting to win the games 6-0 and 6-1. The Falcons improve to 15-5-1 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas play, while the Trojans fall to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
Game 1 – Pfeiffer 6, Anderson 0
In game one, Pfeiffer jumped on the board quick with five runs in the home half of the first inning. With two-outs and two runners on Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) hit a double down the line that scored Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) and Zach Pou (Stanely, NC). After a single by Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC), Miles Pearl (High Point, NC) connected for another two-run double. He was followed by another RBI double this one by Zach Strickland (Liberty, NC) and Pfeiffer went ahead 5-0.
Pfeiffer added a single run in the third when Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) singled home Marsh after he had reached on an error.
Adam Sedberry (Monroe, NC) started on the mound for Pfeiffer and was dominant. He used the 5-0 lead that the batters gave him and kept the Trojan bats at bay. He picked up the win going eight innings giving up only two hits while striking out eight. Casey Smith (Kernersvile, NC) pitched a perfect ninth for the Falcons.
At the plate the bats were led by Ethan Marsh and Zach Pou who each had two hits. Jesse Dunn and Myles Pearl added two RBIs apiece.
For the Trojans Chris Pitts (Easley, SC) took the loss. He started and went seven innings giving up eleven hits and six runs. At the plate Josh Grubbs (Barnwell, SC) picked up the only two hits Anderson had.
Game 2 – Pfeiffer 6, Anderson 1
Game two saw both teams being held at bay by the opposing pitchers until the third. Andrew Davis (Asheboro, NC) led off the inning with a double off Pfeiffer starter Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, NC). He advanced to third on a fly out then scored on an error that gave Anderson the lead at 1-0.
Pfeiffer answered emphatically in the fourth with five runs to jump ahead 5-1. The Falcons batted around in the inning and tallied six hits. Will Davis (New London, NC) singled with one-out, Ethan Marsh reached on a two-out walk and Myles Pearl followed that with a game tying single that scored Davis. Then three consecutive singles by Zack Strickland, Preston Lyon, and Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) were followed by a long two-run single off the right field wall by Eric Shoemaker that highlighted the five run inning.
Pfeiffer added another run the fifth when Davis reached on an HBP and later scored on a SAC fly by Zack Strickland.
McDaniel picked up the win for Pfeiffer pitching a complete game and giving up only the unearned run in the third.
At the plate the Falcons recorded nine hits, two a piece by Josh Strickland and Will Davis. Ethan Marsh chipped in two RBIs in the win.
Bryson Graydon (Laurens, SC) started on the mound for Anderson and suffered the loss. He pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up five hits and five runs. Andrew Davis (Asheboro, NC) had three hits for the Trojans, while Blair Carson (Anderson, SC) added two.
Pfeiffer and Anderson will return to action tomorrow at 1:00PM to finish the three game series.
